One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record News, Thursday, September 21, 1921.)
The report of State Architect H. Liebbe, who inspected the Ringgold County courthouse a week ago Monday, mention of which was made in last week’s Record News, was received by county auditor E. Cornwall Monday.
Mr. Liebbe finds the building is not exactly dangerous in fair weather, but advises that the offices on the SE section be vacated in case of storm and states that in case the storm were severe the building would certainly collapse.
The architect finds that the materials used in the construction of the building were of the weakest sort and or poor grade and have become badly disintegrated by reason of water and frost. He states the building is beyond repair and advises that immediate steps be taken preliminary to erecting a new court house.

Opening the 1946 football season, the Mount Ayr Raiders trounced the Grant City Tigers, 19-12, in a game held on the Grant City field last Friday night.
Jim Braby and Allen Richards accounted for the locals three markers while Gerald Willey collected the single extra point.
Students elect four new cheerleaders during pep assembly Friday for the coming year. Eight candidates tried out in two groups. Those elected by the student body were: Delores McCombs, Barbara Buck, Belle Sickels and Catherine Conant. Edna Walter and Marilyn Denhart, who complete the MACHS cheerleaders sextet led the student body in some school yells.

Residents of this area will have a chance to meet a real Indian warrior Saturday, when Chief William Red Fox appears at Hy-Vee Food Store in Mount Ayr from 9:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m.
Chief Red Fox is 101 years old and is the son of White Swan and Black Eagle and a nephew of Chief Crazy Horse. He is recognized authority on Custer’s Last Stand, being on the battlefield some two hours after the battle, which was June 25, 1876.
He is an Ogallala Sioux Chief. He was 6 years old when he viewed the battle of the Little Big Horn. After the battle his tribe divided, the stronger members moving into Canada, his father and mother among them. He remained behind with his grandparents and younger children and a short time later this group was moved to a reservation in the Dakota territory, now South Dakota.
He traveled 15 years with Buffalo Bill and his wild west show, serving as an interpreter for William F. Cody. The colorful Indian leader, who now makes his home in Corpus Christi, TX, appeared in 107 silent movies.
Open House Saturday at Gerold’s Plumbing. An open house at their new building has been set for Saturday September 25, by Mr. and Mrs. Gerold Willey, owners of Gerold’s Plumbing & Heating.
Susan Harover and Mike Greene were winners of the dance contest held in Mount Ayr gym last Friday. They received albums of the Carpenters and Black Sabbath. The contest was a feature of the Booster sponsored All-School dance.

If only buildings could talk, what history they would reveal!
The Taylor Fiberglass Vault Company Inc. building, erected in Diagonal in 1889, was taken down using volunteer labor on September 5-7 to make way for a brand new structure.
A gift shop will move to the square and a new set of apartments will be constructed in Mount Ayr. This change was announced this week by Ron and Sandy Lamb of Mount Ayr.
The Lambs said that they have purchased the Horne Hardware building on the north side of the square in Mount Ayr. Lamb’s Quarters, the gift shop located in a building on the southwest corner of the intersection of Hwy 169 and Hwy 2 in the eastern part of Mount Ayr will be moved to that building.

Candidates have been named for the homecoming celebration planned for the Mount Ayr Community high school events coming next week.
Queen candidates are: Katelyn Warin, Claire Andresen, Amanda Perrigo, Taylor Lynch and Megan Doubleday. King candidates are: Dustin Pritchett, Dustin Lyden, Alex Sobotka, Harley Hamnilton and Matt Kerns.
For the second year in a row, a Ringgold County driver has risen to the top to take a track championship at the Adams County Speedway in Corning, the venue where many of the county drivers participate. This year it is Paul Glendennings’s turn to reign as the NASCAR Whelen All-American series late model champion.
Another area farm was honored for being in the same family for 100 years when the Century Farm awards were being passed out at the Iowa State Fair this year.
Dean and Marietta Cobb of the Blockton area received the award.
