Mt. Ayr 54,
Panorama 53
The Raiders toughed out a win over the Panorama Panthers last week.
The game came down to the literal buzzer, with the Raiders on top, 54-53.
After the opening quarter of play, the game was tied at 17, but the Raiders were able to pull ahead in the second to lead going into halftime, 33-28.
The lead was just enough to outlast the Panthers, who outscored the Raiders in the second half, 25-22.
The Panthers took a one-point lead with 54.1 seconds left before the Raiders saw a tipped in bucket by Jaixen Frost with 7.7 seconds left to give the Raiders a 54-53 lead.
The clock would wind down with 1.4 seconds left and the Panthers had the ball under their own basket.
The throw-in was intercepted by Braydon Pierson who stayed in-bounds before being pushed out as the buzzer sounded.
After a quick conference of the stripes, the game was called over and the Raiders took their first win of the season to improve to 1-1.
“We are taking away our resolve tonight,” said coach Bret Ruggles. “That is a back-to-back with a very inexperienced team. There are experienced teams that don’t handle that well and for us to come in and have a lot of resolve tonight, our resolve tonight is what I’ll take from it.”
Mount Ayr was led by Frost with 27 points. Frost was 11-of-24 with two-of-five from the arc.
Pierson led the Raiders in rebounds with 10 and had two steals for the Raiders.
