One Hundred Years
(From the Mount Ayr Record News, Thursday, March 8, 1922.)
At their meeting last week the board of supervisors decided to submit to the voters of Ringgold County at the June primary election, the proposition of issuing bonds for the purpose of building a new courthouse.
It is thought that a modern courthouse adequate to meet the demands for many years can be built for $150,000 to $200,000.
A supernatural manifestation is reported from Lyon County.
Preceding the approach of a blizzard the beclouded sky was a flame with what would have been regarded as a flash of lightening had it not tarried so long. The next day it was observed that the snow upon the ground was of an ash color and as it melted the water was also covered with a bluish scum with a strong odor of sulphur.
Water from melted snow had a strong sulphur taste and and ash like sediment. From a stretch of country covering the half of the country the belief that the flash of light was that of a meteor and that meteoric dust was what contaminated the snow and water.

Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record News, Thursday, March 6, 1947.)
Even though Mount Ayr was visited with 3 1/2 inches of snow last week, only .22 of precipitation was recorded during the month of February according to the local weather observer, H.L. Cornelison.
Nine days were clear, seven were cloudy and eight were partly cloudy. The high readings of 54 degrees for the fourteen day period were recorded February 14 and 27, with a low of 3 on February 21.
Since the middle of January, seventeen discharges have been filed in the office of county recorder of Ringgold County, bringing the total to 761.
Of the six weeks’ total, fourteen discharges were from the army and there were three from the navy. The list includes the following: Army-Joseph J. Boyer, Melvin C. Webb, Billie L. Mathis, William Bryan, Donovan Leonard, Carroll D. McAninch, Cloyd Lorenzo Scott, Leonard l. Roach, Hubert L. McCants, Nolan B. Long, Oval L. Comer, Walter N. Johnston, William H. Wilson and Clinton Rice. Navy-Paul Smith, James Robert Jeanes, and Chester Kirkpatrick.
Births: February 21, a daughter, to Mr. and Mrs. Ron Grindstaff.

Saturday night is still the favorite shopping night of residents of Mount Ayr shopping area.
Thats’ the results of the informal poll taken through the Record News by the merchants committee of Mount Ayr Community Improvement Club.
Asked to specify their preference for Saturday night or Monday night shopping, those returning the questionnaires voter for Saturday night by an overwhelming margin of 57-10.

A Lenox woman was injured in an accident at the intersection of Hwy. 2 & County Road P27, Ringgold County’s most dangerous intersection (Goose Pond Corner).
Jessica McGahuey was crowned Ringgold County Pork Queen by 1996 queen Karen Elmer, at the annual meeting of the Ringgold County Pork Producers Friday night.
News From the Armed Services: SSG Harold Ness Jr. of Fort Jackson, SC has been notified that he will be promoted to Sgt. First Class on March 1. He is an instructor at HHC 187th Ord.Bn. Ft. Jackson, SC for light wheel mechanics.
It’s back to the state jazz championships for the MACH school jazz band, which qualified Saturday at the Southwestern Community College contest in Creston.
In the district competition, the Raider band placed first. In the over all Class 2A competition the Raiders finished second to North Polk and ahead of Interstate 35, bands competing out of their district.

MACH speech contestants who gathered a dozen division 1 ratings at district speech contest include: Nicole Phelps, Allison Wallace, Megan Doubleday, Taylor Lynch, Matt Kerns, Taylor Still, Matt Poore and Alex Sobotka.
Joseph Hall brought his Elivs Rock ‘N Remember Tribute show to the American Legion in Mount Ayr from Branson, MO Friday night.
Ringgold County residents have been approached with two scams in the past week that Sheriff Mike Sobotka is warning the public about. One is a cruise scam and the other is a family member in danger scam.
