Mount Ayr 58, SWV 37
The Raiders improved to 2-0 after a physical battle with the Southwest Valley Timberwolves on Friday night.
The Raiders were able to outscore the Timberwolves 58-37 in the win, but it was a little shaky in the beginning.
Southwest Valley jumped ahead late in the first quarter to lead 16-15 before a strong second quarter performance by the Mount Ayr boys to outscore Southwest Valley 16-6 to lead 31-22 at the halftime buzzer.
The Raiders took care of business in the second half to take their second win of the season, and first Pride of Iowa win.
Jaixen Frost led the team in points with 29 and led the team in assists with seven.
Braydon Pierson recorded 12 points on the night, but stayed busy under the bucket, grabbing nine boards, while also snagging three steals.
After the game, Pierson was pleased with the win, but had wounds to show the nature of the scrap with the Timberwolves.
“Being comfortable everywhere on the court, getting to open spots and trusting my teammates,” said Pierson about his ability to get on the board. “You have to keep your head down and know that your teammates are going to be with you and fight through it.”
The Raiders shot 45.7 percent from the field and were good on 12-of-15 freethrows to help propel the Raiders over the Timberwolves.
“I told the boys in the locker room you’re going to have games where you check a box. This was the physical one,” said coach Bret Ruggles. “We showed a lot of toughness tonight. They bled all over the floor to get this win tonight and I will take that.”
The Raiders face the Lenox Tigers on Tuesday in the second Pride of Iowa matchup, of the season.
