One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News,Thursday, June 6, 1923.)
At the special election held Monday in Ringgold county the proposition of issuing bonds in the sum of $160,000 for the purpose of building a new court house to take the place of the old court house which was condemned by state authority in 1921, was defeated by a small margin of 176 votes.
The senior class of the Redding high school is preparing for the commencement exercises which will be held at the U.P. Church on May 24. There are seventeen in the class, the largest graduating class in the history of the school.
The commencement exercises on May 24, held in the Ellston school gymnasium was favored by a large attendance to witness the class of 8 members graduate. The class roll: Vanice Banner, Harvey Lamb, Ray O’Neil Jackson, Mary M. Walters, Clara I. Kauble, Laura B. Fouser, Alice E. Woollums and Josephine L. Stuck.
Marriage: May 30, Rosamond Tedrow and Lynn Newton.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

Freelands Department Store is celebrating the 57th anniversary of its founding with a sale which starts June 4.
Two public measures will be submitted to the voters in Ringgold County in special elections at the primary election to be held Monday.
Voters in all precincts will decide whether or not sufficient funds shall be made available to construct and equip a county hospital.
The proposition calls for the issuance of bonds in the amount of $70,000 to complement the $100,000 favored for hospital purposes by the voters at the last general election.
The proposition of establishing and maintaining fire fighting service will be decided in the townships of Liberty, Poe, Rice, Washington and Waubonsie.
Marriage: April 17, Lt. Glenn Warden and Eleonore Schoenet, of Heidelberg, Germany were united in marriage.
Births: May 24, a daughter, to Mr. and Mrs. Carl Geiger.

Fifty Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News,Thursday, June 7, 1973.)
Two tractors belonging to Rex Shaha, Poe township farmer, were vandalized last Wednesday or Thursday night according to Ringgold County Sheriff, Elbert Strange.
The sheriff said Shaha told him that the two tractors, left in a field, had gauges and radios smashed, grease smeared on the seats and Treflan chemical dumped in the oil. The incident is still under investigation.
Joel McClure joins W.B. Cunning firm starting Monday morning.
Joe Jackson joins Frank Clarke Agency. Jackson and his wife will move to Mount Ayr from Grant City, MO as soon as housing is available.
Mark Packwood and Steve Eason, who will be seniors this fall at Mount Ayr Community high school, are attending Boy’s State this week at Camp Dodge near Des Moines.
David McNeill, recent Mount Ayr Community graduate, won with a 5 under par 103 at the Mount Ayr Golf & Country Club golf tournament on Sunday. There were 105 golfers who participated.
Carlin Lawhead, a senior to be at Mount Ayr Community high school was second with 104.

Births: June 2, a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Don Vanderflught…May 26, a daughter, Wendy, to Mr. and Mrs. Buddy Cole.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

Two young women and two young men led the graduating classes at Ringgold county high schools when top academic honors were announced this week.
Valedictorians: Laura Galloway, Mount Ayr, and Zach Gunsolley for Diagonal. Salutatorians: Jared Trullinger, Mount Ayr and Liz Hoyt, Diagonal.
Eighmy wins state track event. Melissa Eighmy ran the best time of her career (a new school record) when she was clocked at 1:04:37 in the 400 meter hurdles finals in Class 1A at the state track meet in Des Moines, to win the title.
A portion of the second floor of what used to be the IOOF Hall in Mount Ayr was exposed this week when a portion of the wall of the building collapsed.
Diagonal’s Amber Sobotka qualified here Tuesday to go to the Iowa State Class 1A golf tournament to be held June 1-2 Jester Park Golf Course near Granger.
Births: May 19, a daughter, Sarah, to Mr. and Mrs. John Binning…April 14, a daughter, Parker, to Mr. and Mrs. Lee Hogue.

Ten Years Ago

The newly completed bath house/FEMA safe room at Judge Lewis Park was put on display last week in preparation for the beginning of the summer swimming season.
The Mount Ayr Public Library is one of the sites of the “Harley Ride Across Iowa-CSI, Crusin’Scenic Iowa,” sponsored by Big Barn Harley Davidson of Des Moines. The purpose of the ride is to promote communities around the state.
