One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News,Thursday, June 20, 1923.)
Wednesday, June 27 will be Aeroplane Advertising Day in Mount Ayr.
The business men of the town have entered into contract with M.L. Powell, daring and graceful aviator, to make flights over the business district of the city during the afternoon and drop tickets redeemable in merchandise and cash. More than $300 will be given in prizes.
Celebration July 4th plans being made for greatest celebration ever held in Mount Ayr. A feature of the day program will be The Three Ralphs who will present acrobatic acts of thrilling nature. Speaker of the day will be honorable Truman Stevens, judge of the supreme court. A merry-go-round will furnish amusement for the children and older folks who are youthful in spirit. A baseball game between Lamoni and Mount Ayr will be played at the ball park.
Aeroplane flights will be the features of the afternoon and evening performances. Sky writing in the afternoon and illuminated flight at night. Band concerts by the Mount Ayr band will be given in intervals and the Harmony Four male quartet is scheduled.
Dr. J.E.Cox, of Des Moines, a graduate of Des Moines Still College will locate in Mount Ayr July 1st for the practice of osteopathy. Dr. Cox has rented rooms in the Collins building on the north side of the square where his office will be located.
Marriage: Saturday morning Margaret Kaubbe and Howard Taggert were united in marriage.
Births: Born on Monday a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. R.A. Longcoy.
Seventy-Five Years Ago

Sheriff H.P. Todd was called to Benton last Friday to investigate a case of vandalism in the Benton Cemetery.
Twenty-eight monuments were reported overturned in the cemetery, causing considerable damage to the stones and the cemetery grounds.
Sheriff Todd reports that the molesters were supposedly several young boys. He reported no automobile tire tracks on the ground near scene of damage.
Explosion of a “stepped up” firecracker in his hand cost Bob Mahoney part of his right hand Wednesday night. He is the 17 year old son of Mrs. Freeman Reif of Diagonal.

Area residents have been invited to an open house at the Mount Ayr Manufacturing Co. plant in Mount Ayr today. Manager, Jim Hurd said the plant will be in full operation manufacturing caps and hunters vests.
If present plans materialize Ringgold County 4-H girls will have their own building at the county fair this year.
That’s the goal of John Henry, Ringgold County Fair board, who said a new building has been ordered with delivery expected the week of July 9. The building is expected to be erected the week of July 9. The building is expected to be erected in time for the annual fair, July 23-26.
Duane Dredge and Dennis Pearson took top honors at the weekly races sponsored by the Ringgold County Speedway.

Assembly of God church building rises here.
A large crew of volunteers helped frame in the walls for the new Assembly of God Church building in Mount Ayr over the weekend. The church is located at the west end of Mount Ayr on Hwy 2 & 169.
Golfers hope to set record with trip. A dozen golfers with Ringgold County ties are off to set a record for the Guiness Book of Records this week.
It’s another brainchild of Mount Ayr’s Lynn Rinehart and his Jay-Lynn O golf tours, named for Jay Watson and Lynn Rinehart. The golfers hope to be the first to play a round of golf in five different states in the same day–Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Illinois.
The grandson and great grandson of Mount Ayr residents was among students graduating from St. Ambrose University in Davenport this spring. Colby Irving graduated magna cum laude, receiving a bachelor of science degree in psychology and political science. Irving will attend the University of Iowa law school in August. He is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Patrick Irving of Davenport. His grand parents include Hazel Foltz of Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. David Irving of Mount Ayr and is the great grandson of Mary Foltz.

Ten Years Ago

Madison Hosfield, 2013 Iowa’s homecoming queen, will attend the 32nd annual America Homecoming Queen national finals in Memphis, TN July 20-24.
After a wait of over a year, kids now get to enjoy the swimming pool at Judge Lewis Park. The pool had been closed all last summer due to mechanical problems.
Births: May 21, a son, Isaac, to Ty & Rachael Boyer.
