One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News,Thursday, June 27, 1923.)
The concerts being played by the Mount Ayr Band on Saturday evening are proving fine attraction, and each Saturday evening an increase is noted in the numbers of automobiles parked around the square.
Last Saturday evening there were by actual count 512 cars in the city.
Lights are being installed every three miles across the state in order that the practicability of night airplane service may be tested.
At Iowa City, Williamsburg, Montezuma, Reasoner, Des Moines, Earlham, Casey and Avoca 50 foot towers will be erected surmounted with a 30” search light and at intervals around the edge of the 40 acre tract will be small lights. The large lights announce to the aviator a safe landing place in case of an emergency, while the smaller lights simply guide him on his way. A newly devised illuminating gas will provide the lights.

John R. Vanderflught purchased at public auction Saturday the Joe Bullock building and lot north of the Mount Ayr Mill and Feed for $1,210.
Tall corn honors are being claimed by B. Freel of Redding, who reported Saturday at the Record News office that he has an acre of corn, the stalks of which measure six feet in height. The hybrid corn of the Earl May 99A variety was planted.
The Iowa Department of Public Safety has announced that Thursday, June 24 will be the first day for renewing drivers licenses in Ringgold County, at the sheriff’s office in the court house.
If you satisfactorily pass the vision test at the time of the application for renewal, you will be issued a new license upon the surrender of your 1946-1948 license and for a fee of 50 cents.

A free concert featuring area rock bands will be presented Thursday night, July 3, in Judge Lewis Park.
Four bands are on the program, which gets under way at 7:30 p.m.
They include Craw of Mount Ayr, Banshine of Lamoni, Omega Memorial of Creston and Sunshine of Mount Ayr.
Vital statistics for the 2nd quarter of the year 1973 as complied by Rollin Noble, Clerk of Court of the district court include 2 adoptions, 36 births, 26 deaths, 26 burial permits, 15 marriage licenses and two marriage dissolutions.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

Amanda Tull and Buddy Hall have filed pleas that will see them doing considerable time in federal prison in a kidnapping case.
Tull, formerly of Ringgold County, and Hall, formerly of Worth County, MO, were arrested and charged with stealing a baby from a Kansas City, KS hospital and showing the newborn around Worth County, MO as being their own child.
The Mount Ayr Minors little league team sponsored by WoodLink was the top team in the early season Diagonal little league tournament held recently.
Team members are as follows: Logan Larson, Donnie Langloss, Tyler Campbell, Jesse Still, Lance Brown, Lucas Still, Zachary Lynch, Chad Kingery, Austin French, Johnny Ingram, Chase French, Hans Larson, Duane Langloss, Brett Cannon. Coaches are, Sandy French, Eric Brown, and Bob French.
Births: May 14, a daughter, Megan, to Eric and Dana Nelson…June 11, a son, Kyle, to John and Sherry Wininger.

The Mount Ayr Raider football team delivered new garbage cans to area residents as a community service project, in preparation for the city taking over the garbage collecting service.
Knedler book signing part of Ayr Days celebration. Former Mount Ayr resident, Janet Barker Knedler of Topeka, KS has written and published a children’s book entitled, “The Fantastic Adventures of Smoki.”
May 26, First Christion Church in Mount Ayr remembered Rev. Phil Kinton by dedicating a Memorial Brick to honor his many years of commitment and service to the church camping ministry.
