Looking back in the early files

Injuries  the extent of which have not yet been fully determined were sustained by Aviator J.O. Lewis, of Leon tonight about 9:30 o’clock when the aeroplane in which he was making an illuminated flight as one of the features of 4th of July celebration in Mount Ayr, crashed to the ground, alighting on the hillside west of the home of George Dickerson on the Wilson farm northwest of the city.

President Harding on Memorial Day reiterated his statement of a couple years ago that in the event of another war all interests and all resources and all men should be conscripted and should serve the nation on an equal basis.

“We have already proven that we can have less of armament,” the President declared.”  “Let us strive for the assurance that we shall have none of war. We will not alone call to service the youth of the land, but we will draft every resource, every activity, all of the wealth, and make common cause of the nation’s preservation. It will be a more grateful nation which consecrates all to a common cause, and there will be more to share the gratitude bestowed. More, there will be a finer conscience in our war commitments and that sublimily of spirit which makes a people invincible.”

Hugh Terwilliger, of the Rice Rustlers 4-H club is the new country 4-H president. He was elected to this office at the county 4-H camp.

Other officers elected include John Taylor, Washington Chaps, vice president; Dick Richardson, Atom Boys, secretary-treasurer and Norman Jennings, Ellston Eagles, reporter-historian.

Miss Christine Egly was elected county chairman Saturday at a meeting of the Ringgold Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Other officers elected included, Mrs. Leroy Hill of Benton, vice chairman; Miss Telma Caryl, secretary; Miss Mary Boyles, treasurer.

Fire believed to have originated from a 5-burner kerosene stove caused the total destruction of the Floyd Comer home just northeast of Redding early Tuesday morning.

Karen Newton of Mount Ayr, who will be a senior in Mount Ayr Community this fall, has joined the Record News staff as a trainee under a program sponsored by the MATURA Rural Youth Program.

A new member of the Mount Ayr police force is Richard Smith of Mount Ayr, a veteran of six years on the Los Angeles, CA police force.

More cars and bigger crowd. That was the story at the regular races at the Ringgold County Speedway Sunday night. No one driver dominated the races Sunday, although Tom Swanson and Francis Willis each won two events.

A new shelter house is being constructed in the Judge Lewis Park in Mount Ayr this summer.

The shelter house is being built next to the horseshoe courts installed in the park by the Mount Ayr Lions Club.

Ringgold County’s Hollywood connection was in evidence this weekend as Hilary Swank and her husband, Chad Lowe, were back in the area to visit Hilary’s family.

The Ringgold County Board of Health announces the selection of Karla Hynes as the new administrator of the Ringgold County Public Health Nursing Agency.

Hynes replaces Marcia Showalter, the agency’s administrator for the past 14 years, who will assume the elementary school nurse position.

A Mount Ayr student has been named a 1998 National Junior College academic all-American by the National Council of Independent Junior College in Washington, D.C.

Honored was Judi Schlapia, a recent graduate of the American Institue of Business.

Two bicyclists stopped for breakfast in Mount Ayr Tuesday on their cross-country trip from San Francisco to New York.

Finish students Pippu Ahvenainen and Laura Kahkonen began their journey 5 weeks ago and plan to arrive in New York in about four weeks.

If price per acre is any indication, farmland in the upper midwest these days is at a premium. In fact the prices should include the word “Wow” as an addendum to underscore just how high this precious land is going.

Farmers National Company offers a sampling of recent land sales. In Iowa, the high was $12,500 per acre, while in Minnesota it hit $9,500 per acre, all from recent sales.

New Law July 1-Iowa law will now require all school employees to undergo a check of the sex offender registry and the dependent adult abuse registry prior to employment.

Iowa woodlands have shrunk by 40,000 acres, according to the latest Forest Inventory Analylis conducted by the USDA Forest Service, marking the first time since 1974 that Iowa has lost woodlands.
