One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News,Thursday, October 17, 1923.)
The football game Friday evening between Corning and Mount Ayr was contested in a sea of mud.
Both teams had pep throughout the game and were always on their toes. The teams were equally matched except that Corning had us out classed punting.
The most spectacular play was by Shroyer who made a 30 yard gain in the last quarter. Neither side was able to score.
Tingley News: A large grading outfit which employs fifty men and eighty mules are workin on the 3-mile stretch south from the county line. They surely ought to make the dirt fly.
A suit for $5,000 damages against the city of Creston and the park commission is to be filed by Lester Aldrich of Shenandoah as the results of injuries alleged to have been suffered last July at McKinnely Park.
Aldrich declares in his petition that he visited the park and went swimming; that guards informed him the water was 10 feet deep at a point from which he dived, but that it was only 2 1/2 feet deep and that he struck the bottom with his head. Two vertebrates were dislocated and two were cracked as the results.
Some thief visited John Fraiser’s garage one night last week, taking his batteries from his Buick 6. Mr. Fraiser had quite a sweat up trying to get his car started before discovering the loss

Seventy-Five Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News,Thursday, May 6, 1948.)
The remains of the late T-Sgt. Richard E. Newton were scheduled to arrive in New York from Europe on or about October 6, aboard the U.S. Army Transport Carroll Victory.
Richard, familiarly known as “Newt”, was killed July 3, 1944, while serving in France.
The Mount Ayr FFA Chapter won the silver cup traveling trophy at the Lamoni Dairy Field day of judging contest, Tuesday September 21.
This traveling trophy is a project of the Lamoni Fair board working in cooperation with the businessmen through the vocational agriculture department.
Victor Dalby, lumberman and member of the Clearfield city council, last week was named mayor of Clearfield. Mr. Dalby was selected for the position to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of William Young.

Mrs. Maxine Anderson was elected president of the Rose Hill Cemetery Association during the organization’s annual meeting.
Ordination services for Karl Beesley, who has accepted a call from the Tingley and Mount Ayr Presbyterian churches will be held October 20.
Craig Riggs of Tingley has assumed his duties as president of the Bedford National Bank.
Hy-Vee specials this week will be the following: Jeno’s frozen pizza, 69 cents; head of lettuce, 19 cents; Betty Crocker cake mixes, 3 for 99 cents; Bacon, 99 cents for one pound; Hy-Vee bread, 89 cents for 3 loaves; Oreo cookies, 15 oz. for 49 cents and rump roast, $1.49 a pound.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

Annie Johnson and Brooks Brown reigned as the homecoming royalty for the Mount Ayr Community homecoming activities last week.
Neil Morgan of Kellerton was elected president of the county’s largest farm organization, “Farm Bureau”.
The Mount Ayr American Legion has started a new program this year. When the Legion color guard marched down the field at the beginning of the football game September 19, sixth graders were invited to march with the group carrying American flags.
Mount Ayr Community’s FFA chapter earned a gold medal at the district soils judging contest in Knoxville. The team consisted of Abby Jeanes, Richard Faris, Josh Schaaf, and Ben Dorr.
A ribbon cutting ceremony was held at Mount Ayr Vision Center last week to welcome Sandy Armstrong as optician and manager. The store is located on the east side of the square on Taylor Street.

Ten Years Ago

Jim and Ann Werner of Diagonal ranked second largest in registering the most Angus beef cattle in Iowa having recorded 256 head of Angus with the American Angus Association.
Raider band drum major Allison Wallace accepts first place trophy at last week’s Loess Hills Field Fest held in Glenwood.
On Tuesday, the first of October, the government shut down began. It left many wondering why it happened, how it would affect them and when would it end.
This shut down has furloughed 33 million government workers. Only the most necessary government functions such as the postal service and military are still in place.
This school year Mount Ayr Community school has put a large emphasis on educating staff and students about bullying in hopes to prevent it.
