One Hundred Years Ago

Almost impassable roads resulted from the rain early Monday morning prevented a large attendance at the American Legion Armistice Day celebration in Mount Ayr.
The clouds hung heavy practically the entire day and it was not possible to carry out in full the splendid program that had been arranged for the occasion.
Farm Bureau News- Tingley Township-Districts 7 and 8 held a meeting Thursday, November 8 at Mrs. Elsie Fouser’s. It was the second lesson of the sewing course. Thirteen ladies and five children were present: Mrs. Leo Wilson, Mrs. William Blauer, Mrs. S.O. Henderson, Miss Monefay Winterscheid, Mrs. Vern Creveling, Mrs. Floyd Moore, Mrs. J.W. Stephenson, Mrs. C.D. Johnston, Mrs. Albert Allen, Miss Mae Cole, and Mrs. Elsie Fouser.
Emory Parnell, the one-man band, will appear as the second number of the lecture course, November 22 at the Methodist Church.
Birth: October 31, a daughter, to Mr. and Mrs. Walter Bullock.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

Sue Maggard, 8 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Acel Maggard, of Rice township, was taken Saturday evening to Des Moines, where she enter the Iowa Lutheran Hospital for treatment of polio.
Jack Dalbey and Paul Beymer, prominent Diagonal business men, were elected by the “write-in” method as Ringgold County hospital trustees, according to the official canvass of the vote cast at the recent general election.
Mr. and Mrs. M.H. Obermeier, Mrs. John England and Mrs. Francis Smith took part in the Beaconsfield high school bond burning program last week.
Mr. and Mrs. David Irving transacted business Tuesday in Des Moines. They were accompanied by Mrs. Truman Dulany and the Irving’s son, Pat, who spent the day with Mrs. Dulany’s brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Burl Greenrod.
Notice to car and truck owners-The alleys are paved and are now usable in all weather and on and after this notice all trucks will use the alleys for unloading merchandise.
There has been much complaint about the double parking of cars and trucks in the streets and after this notice the double parking ordinance will be enforced.

Fifty Years Ago

The Maloy school building has been sold by the Mount Ayr Community school district.
Action was taken at the regular meeting of the school board Monday night. The high bid of the two received was for $1,250 and was submitted by Hertz Farm Management, Inc.
Two ex-Raiders on Drake University mat squad..Larry Bishop, freshman, and Kent Blunck, a sophomore at Drake University will represent Drake in the Oklahoma International November 23-24.
Stock rustlers are beginning to operate in the Ringold County area again according to Sheriff Elbert Strange. Seven head of hogs were reported stolen by Roger Gilbert from his farm south of Kellerton.
Births: November 9, a daughter, to Mr. and Mrs. David Weeda…November 11, a daughter, Jennifer, to Mr. and Mrs. Dan Coulson.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

A Mount Ayr resident, Dawn McGrath, won 1st place honors in the state nail art competition at the 64th annual convention of the National Cosmetology Assoc. of Iowa held in Des Moines recently.
Mount Ayr, Diagonal school boards add driver’s ed to sharing-Diagonal high school principal, Larry Teply, has been the driver’s education teacher in the district in the past, but the Diagonal district asked if the MAC school district would be interested in teaching the Diagonal students in the future.
Planting a soybean plot was a unique way to raise money to finish off paying for defibrillators for the First Responders across Ringgold county.
The Ringgold county Emergency Medical Service Assoc. purchased six defibrillators in February 1997 for the the early response teams in Diagonal, Tingley, Ellston, Kellerton, Redding, Maloy and one for the ambulance. The group raised money with fund raisers, grants, donations, and a loan from Ringgold Co. Hospital. The loan was paid off with 49.2 acre bean plot.
Jeff and Rhonda Quick donated use of the land. Helping with seed, chemicals, planting, combining, crop insurance, labor and other items were Scott Derscheid, Kory Klommhaus, Rick Stewart, Tammy Buman, Farmers Coop of MA, Monsanto, Croplan, Crestland Coop of Benton, Bill and Ginny Quick, Randy and Chris Bishop, Pioneer Seed, Farmers Mutual, SWBS, Tammy England, Doyle Richards, Frank Richards, and Nick Doolittle.
Births: October 30, a daughter, Lauren, to Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Johnson.

Ten Years Ago

Five years later, Princess Theater thrives after refurbishing-It’s hard to believe it’s been over 5 years since the newly refurbished Princess Theater in Mount Ayr opened its doors August 8, 2008. And by all signs, the theater will remain open for a long, long time.
A former Mount Ayr basketball player is beginning her third year with the Buena Vista University basketball team. Becca Pennington, a 5’7” guard, averaged 8.5 points and 3.9 rebounds per game for the Beavers last season.
Warin honored by HCI Hospice…November is National Hospice month, a time to raise awareness about the compassionate care that hospice and palliative care provides to more than 1.58 million people with life limiting illness each year. At the heart of the hospice care model are volunteers. Mount Ayr resident, Grace Warin, is one of these dedicated volunteers and has been recognized for her contributions by the Hospice and Palliative Care Assoc. of Iowa.
