One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News,Thursday, November 28, 1923.)
Frank Wilson of this city was recently appointed as assistant district attorney for the southern district of Iowa and will assume the duties of his office January 1.
In the past 15 years in Iowa the death rate from tuberculosis has been lowered 45 percent, which means in the state of Iowa alone a savings of 12,000 lives and a money savings to the community of $96,000,000.
The 45 percent in death rate during the past 15 years is the result attributed mainly to the campaign of education, prevention, and treatment financed largely by Christmas Seal funds.
On the 11th day of November, 1897, at Gilman, Marshall county, Iowa, Clarence Ackley and Dewey Anderson were born. That was 26 years ago.
The parents of both boys in after years went west, both locating in Salem, OR. Now it is announced that both young men died on the same day in November. The coincidence was deemed of sufficient interest to justify the associated press in sending it to the newspaper of the entire country.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

Dickey Baker, 14 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Doyle Baker, who live in the northeast edge of Mount Ayr, concluded that Santa Claus was making an early visit to Mount Ayr, when Monday morning while working in the yard he looked up in time to see a large buck deer coming towards him.
To say that Dickey was surprised is only making conversation. “I was speechless when I saw him” said Dickey. “We looked at each other, and after a few minutes of silence, I was able to point him out to Bob Ferguson and Mrs. John Young, who were at our home, and then I ran into the house to get my little brother,” Dickey continued. Full of excitement Dickey said, “He could handle those feet like a top, boy was he ever pretty and could he ever clear a fence.”
General plans for construction of a 24-bed county hospital in Mount Ayr has been approved by the U.S. Public Health Service, according to information received this week by Clyde Lesan, chairman of the county hospital board of trustees.
Approval was given to the schematic drawings for the $281,729 project with the exception of a few minor items recommended for slight changes.

Fifty Years Ago

Receiving the coveted Eagle Scout award Friday evening at special court of honor will be Buddy Powell, Chuck Long, Jeff Warren, Kurt Shaha and Maurice Greene.
Kenny Reynolds, senior, 126 pound Raider wrestler, was selected by the Raider coaches as the outstanding Mount Ayr wrestler in the Lenox match.
Crews of the Iowa Southern Utilities and Rideta Electric Coop. were busy Monday putting up the traditional holiday decorations on Mount Ayr streets. But there will be a difference this year…no lights. In accordance with President Nixon’s request to eliminate non-essential decorative lighting.
Winners in the State Fair Talent search at the Bill Riley program in Mount Ayr last week were, Tally Sue Hohlfeld, second; quartet of Kim Henry, Joan Fisher, Patty Sheldon, and Mary Beth Fell, third; and winner Kathy Allen with her solo.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

One Mount Ayr community FFA chapter member received the American Farmer degree, the highest degree awarded by the National FFA organization at the national convention in Kansas City, MO last week.
Nathan Nickle of Clearfield received that honor. Nickle is the son of Randall and Candy Nickle of Clearfield.
Methamphetamine drug raid held at two Kellerton addresses. A joint operation by the Decatur Co. Drug Task Force brought law enforcement officers to three residences, one in Ringgold County and two in Decatur Co. where six people were charged with methamphetamine related crimes, Thursday November 12.
Births: November 13, a son, Ryan, to Mr. and Mrs. Mark Huffman.

Ten Years Ago

Amber Fooken, social worker at Clearview home in Mount Ayr, has received the Excellance in Long Term and Post Acute Care Award for social services from the Iowa Health Care Assoc. Fooken was honored recently at the Association state convention in Des Moines.
A pair of Raiderette volleyball players have been honored with inclusion on the Pride of Iowa all-conference list.
Senior, Paige Daughton, was named to the second team as a hitter. Freshman, Maci Larsen, was included on the second team as a setter. Larsen was the only freshman to receive all-conference recognition.
