The Mount Ayr girl’s basketball team picked up their first victory of the season last Friday at home.
Mount Ayr will play two POI games this week. Lenox comes to town on Tuesday with their 3-1 record and Mount Ayr goes to Bedford Friday.
“From game one we beat Lamoni, and we played Clarke where we looked better, but sometimes inexperienced. We played even better at Mercer. We are playing better each time out,” said Mount Ayr head coach Thad Streit.
“We are excited to play a couple of POI games this week. Lenox has a good group of girls and has only lost once. Our games with them have kind of turned into a rivalry. They have some good depth that can make shots, it will be a tough game to start the week,” he said.
The Raiderettes hosted SW Valley for their home and Pride of Iowa Conference opener last Friday. There, Mount Ayr took a 60-37 win over the Timberwolves.
The win was the tenth straight over SW Valley. The Raiderettes used a 25-4 first-quarter run to take command of the game.
The Raiderettes were in for a good game when they got the opening tip and scored using no dribbles. Jaxy Knight was the recipient of two quick passes for a bucket and an early 2-0 lead.
The Raiderettes would take advantage of 14 first-quarter Timberwolves turnovers.
The Raiderettes began the game by scoring the first 18 points for an 18-0 lead with 3:00 left in the opening quarter. Two Ada Lund free throws with 2:15 left in the first quarter gave SW Valley their first points and set the score at 18-2. Mount Ayr would close the quarter on a 7-2 run to lead 25-4 after the first quarter.
Jaxy Knight and Breya Nickle each made two three-pointers in the opening quarter. For the game, Knight was 4-for-5 from behind the three-point line.
Mount Ayr followed up their big first quarter with a 13-6 run to take a 38-10 halftime lead. Gilbertson had four points in the second quarter and Abby Larson and Jaylee Shaffer each made three-pointers in the second quarter.
Southwest Valley made their first field goal, a three-pointer by Hailey Randall with 3:40 left before halftime. To that point, all seven of SW Valley’s points were from the free-throw line.
The Timberwolves would outscore Mount Ayr in the second half. SW Valley used a 17-11 run in the third quarter to help outscore Mount Ayr 27-22 in the second half.

Mount Ayr began their week with a game against Class 3A No. 13 Clarke in Osceola. There, the Indians beat Mount Ayr 64-48. Mount Ayr trailed 28-20 at halftime.
The Indians would double their 8-point lead to 16 after three quarters by using an 18-10 run. Each team scored 18 points in the final quarter.
Freshman Izzy Gilbertson led Mount Ayr with 21 points and 13 rebounds for a double-double. Breya Nickle added 16 points and eight rebounds. Clarke’s Allissa Henry led all scorers with 30 points.
