One Hundred Years Ago

A vigilance committee of 32 members was organized at the town hall in Mount Ayr Friday evening and guns and ammunition were distributed by Sheriff Marion Stephens.
The committee was organized at the instance of the Iowa State Bankers’ Assoc., working through the Ringgold county Bankers’ Assoc., of which D.V. Ferris of Diagonal, is president and C.G. Allen of this city is secretary.
R. S. Saunders, representing the state assoc., was present at the meeting and made an interesting address, instructing the members in regard to their duties.
Members of the committee have been deputized as special deputy sheriffs and are empowered to serve as peace officers in cases not only of bank robberies but of robberies of all kinds.
Sheriff Marion Stephens was called to Middle Fork township yesterday morning by a report that an automobile had been left stranded in a ditch along the roadside near the home of John Rush.
The sheriff responded immediately and took charge of the car, a 1923 model Ford, which evidently had been run in the ditch intentionally. Both number plates had been removed and there were no identification marks on the car.
The Iowa Supreme Court has held that a husband who kills his wife has no right to insurance money on her life and sustained the clause in a policy which provided for forfeiture of the policy in event of her death should be caused by her beneficiary.

Wendell Caskey yesterday assumed his duties as the local manager of the Hawkeye Lumber Company.
Senior Biography: Marilyn Denhart is the senior girl of the week. Marilyn’s age is seventeen and she celebrates her birthday on September 3. She if 5’4” tall and has brown hair and blue eyes. Marilyn has been a member of Boosters for 3 years, girls Glee Club 4 years, mixed chorus 3 years, FHA her freshman, sophomore, and senior years, cheerleader her freshman and sophmore years and Tri-Hi-Y her senior year. Marilyn states her hobby as dancing and she says she has no favorite food. She just likes “everything”. After graduation she plans to obtain an office job.
A total of $126.15 in cash has been contributed to date by the town and rural schools of the county to the Christian Rural Overseas Program (CROP), according to a report of Vera Dickens, county superintendent.

Old man winter tossed his first snow storm of the season at the area Tuesday, with about five inches of the white stuff accumulating on the ground.
Joen Brown and Joe Gross were elected worthy matron and worthy patron of the Mount Ayr chapter No. 356 Order of the Eastern Star during the regular meeting held December 3.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

A Corning woman died Friday when she jumped out of the second story window at the Ringgold County Hospital.
Mary Briles, 42, of Corning died from injuries she received when she landed head first after falling from a window on the southwest side of the building.
Mike Sobotka of rural Mount Ayr began serving as deputy sheriff of Ringgold County on November 16. Sobotka joins Ringgold County law enforcement staff members, Lyle Minnick, Ringgold County sheriff Bob Bennett, and deputy sheriff Landon White.
A fourth place finish in the Nodaway Valley invitational tournament and a victory over 2 teams in the first Pride of Iowa conference dual meet of the season marked a great start for the Mount Ayr Raider wrestlers this week.

Birth: November 19, a daughter, Jocelyn, to Mr. and Mrs. Jim Burton.

Ten Years Ago

Queen and king for the 2013 Diagonal homecoming celebration are Jaylee Bogan and Ismail Omar.
SSD Stands for Specialized Search Dog and Garrett Peterson, a 2009 graduate from Mount Ayr Community high school, currently serves as a military working dog handler.
He handles a specialized search dog named Jackson, a black lab. Jackson who’s misssion is to find all military grade explosives and HME”s (homemade explosives).
Peterson enlisted in the Marines in January 2011.Peterson is the son of Tenise Klommhaus and Scott Peterson.
