The Mount Ayr girl’s basketball team won their third and fourth games of the year last week and saw their POI record go to 3-0 with wins over Bedford and Lenox.
The Raiderettes are tied for the Pride of Iowa Conference lead going into this week with fellow unbeaten Central Decatur and Martensdale-St. Mary’s who are both 2-0. Nodaway Valley is right there too at 1-0 in the POI.
The wins gave Mount Ayr an overall record of 4-2 heading into this week’s games.
Mount Ayr has three more games before Christmas. This week, the Raiderettes host SE Warren on Thursday, December 14, and Worth County on Friday.
Mount Ayr began their week with a near rout over Lenox, 78-59. The Raiderettes win snapped a three-game win streak by the Tigers and was the second straight near 20-point win in a row over the Tigers. The win was the fourth straight over Lenox.
Mount Ayr ran away from the Tigers in the first quarter and first half, scoring 46 points in the first half. The Raiderettes led 23-15 after the first quarter and a 23-6 second-quarter run extended Mount Ayr’s lead to 46-21 at halftime.
Lenox cut into the Mount Ayr lead in the third quarter, outscoring Mount Ayr 23-18, but an evenly played fourth quarter dashed comeback hopes for Lenox.
Mount Ayr shot a blistering 56.4-percent from the floor in the game and made 31 shots. The Raiderettes were equally on fire from the three-point line, making 9-of-16 attempts in the game.
Junior Jaxy Knight scored a career-high 30 points in the game on 12-of-16 shooting and making 5-of-7 three-pointers. Freshman Izzy Gilbertson added 23 points and 9 rebounds. Breya Nickle, Dannie Stewart, and Jaylee Shaffer were near double figures in the game and helped the Raiderette starters out score the Tigers starters 74-54 in the game.
Lenox was led by junior Sadie Cox with 30 points and 20 rebounds in an incredible individual performance. Cox made 14-of-29 shots and missed only one free throw attempt. Izzy Curtis was next with eight points.
Mount Ayr traveled to Bedford on Friday, December 8 where they met an experienced Bulldog squad. Bedford has five seniors in their top seven players and many returning starters.
In the game, Mount Ayr used a 10-5 first-quarter run to take an early lead. The second quarter saw a lot of points scored by both teams, but the Raiderettes managed to outscore Bedford 17-16 in the quarter to take a 6-point, 27-21 halftime lead.
Mount Ayr used a key 12-8 run in the third quarter to extend their lead to ten points, 39-29 heading to the final quarter. Both teams scored 15 points in the final quarter.
Mount Ayr had three players reach double figures and two players had double-doubles in the game. Breya Nickle led with 18 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists, and 4 steals. Izzy Gilbertson also had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Jaxy Knight had a nice game with 13 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2 steals.
Bedford was led by two double-figure scorers. Alexis Perkins led with a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Bridgett Murphy added 10 points and 5 assists.
The win was the third in a row for Mount Ayr while Bedford lost their third straight game. The win was the 15th straight win over Bedford for Mount Ayr since the 2016 season.
