The Mount Ayr Raider boy’s basketball team earned two victories late last week to improve to 5-2 in their first seven games.
The Raiders beat SE Warren 67-51 on Thursday, December 14, and added a 54-44 win over Worth County Missouri the next night on December 15.
The Raiders have one more game this month, a Tuesday, December 19 game at Nodaway Valley.
Mount Ayr won their 14th straight game against the SE Warren Warhawks dating back to the 2012 season. The Raiders have scored at least 60 points in each of those times. The win over SE Warren set Mount Ayr’s record at 4-2.
The Raiders led 13-10 after the first quarter. The Raiders trailed 3-1 with 5:45 left in the quarter, but then got a three-pointer from Ryce Reynolds and a rebound-put back from Tate Dugan to take a 6-3 lead with 3:35 left in the quarter. The Raiders led the rest of the quarter and took their biggest lead of the first with another Reynolds three-pointer to push their lead to six points, 13-7 with less than a minute left in the quarter.
In the second quarter, buckets by Tyler Martin and Trevin Victor in the first two minutes of the quarter gave Mount Ayr a 17-13 lead. SE Warren would make a little run of 6-2 to get the score tied at 19 with 3:30 left in the half. The Raiders would finish the quarter on a 7-0 run to take a 26-19 halftime lead. Two Dugan hoops and a three-pointer by Martin accounted for the points in the run.
Mount Ayr would take control of the game in the third quarter, out-scoring SE Warren by ten points, 21-11 in the quarter while taking a 47-30 lead to the last quarter. The Raiders led by double figures the whole quarter. Three different Raiders made three-pointers in the game and as a team, Mount Ayr connected on five three-pointers in the quarter. Jackson Ruggles made three, three-pointers while Martin and Victor added one each.
In the final quarter, SE Warren would make a run. After Mount Ayr built up a 21-point, 51-30 lead, the Warhawks used a 12-0 run to pull within 51-42 with 5:28 left in the game. A great pass from Ruggles to Louden Main for a fast break basket stopped the run and gave the Raiders an 11-point, 53-42 lead with 5:12 left. The Raiders would out-score SE Warren 14-9 over the final five minutes to capture the win.
Mount Ayr had three players reach double figures in the game. Jackson Ruggles scored 18 points and had 7 assists to lead Mount Ayr in scoring. Tyler Martin scored 17 points and had 6 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals. Tate Dugan added 14 points and 11 rebounds. The Raiders held a 33-23 rebound advantage in the game.
SE Warren was led by Cam Seuferer with 13 points and 12 rebounds, and Brogan Ewing who scored 11 points and made three, three-point baskets.
The Raiders pulled away late in their game against Worth County Missouri on Friday. The Raiders were outscored in only one quarter in their ten-point, 54-44 win. Mount Ayr led 17-12 after the first quarter and outscored Worth County 14-10 in the second quarter to take a 31-22 lead at halftime. The Raiders led by seven points, 41-34 after three quarters. Mount Ayr was able to take the win in the fourth, out-scoring Worth County 13-10 in the quarter.
Three Raiders scored in double figures led by Ryce Reynolds who had 17 points and 10 rebounds. Jackson Ruggles added 16 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Tyler Martin scored 12 points and grabbed five rebounds.
Mount Ayr shot 47-percent from the floor in the game and made six three-pointers. The Raiders shot well from the free throw line in the contest, making 14-of-18 attempts. Mount Ayr improved to 5-2 with the win and 2-1 in non-conference games.
