The Mount Ayr middle school girl’s basketball teams’ finished up their pre-Christmas schedule with two games against Nodaway Valley.
In the A game, Mount Ayr was challenged on Friday, December 15, to come out with intensity, confidence, and a focus to take care of the ball.
“We need to cut down on our turnovers as it limits our opportunities to score points. The first game started great and we led 10-4 at the half. Several easy shots were missed though and we left points on the floor. Our defense was so good it looked like we were going to dominate them. In the second half, we had a couple of runs where we went back to some bad habits with poor passing. This led to some turnovers and easy buckets for them. As the clock ticked down, we clung to a lead, but we just couldn’t get the ball to go in the basket,” said coach Josh Vanderflught.
Too many missed shots and turnovers caught up to Mount Ayr, and Nodaway Valley took the lead with under a minute left. Mount Ayr had a chance at the end, but it just wasn’t their day, as the Wolverines would escape with a one-point, 22-21 win.
Scoring in the first game were Emma Reynolds leading with 9, Abbie Case 5, Emily Knox 4, Kate Newton 2, and Mackenzie Jackson 1-point.
The second game started off tight and was tied 8-8 at the end of the first quarter Mount Ayr turned it up in the second quarter and led 17-12 at halftime. Mount Ayr extended their lead to 26-17 at the end of the third. In the fourth quarter, Mount Ayr let the Wolverines get back in the game, but Mount Ayr held on to win 29-27.
Teyanna Combs 9, Talyn Greene 7, Bralyn Martin 4, Mackenzie Jackson 4, Irais Trujillo 2, Emily Knox 2, and Claire Routh 1-point.
Mount Ayr will be off for Christmas break until January 2 and 3. Their next game is on January 4.
