The Mount Ayr Raiderette girl’s basketball team finished up the pre-Christmas break portion of their schedule on December 19 at Nodaway Valley.
Mount Ayr is one of the good stories of the POI this year with a 6-2 team and not a senior in their starting lineup. Nodaway Valley came into the game as the No. 5 ranked team in Class 2A and just one loss in eight games. Something had to give, and it was the Raiderettes. Nodaway Valley would take an 84-43 win to improve to 7-1. Mount Ayr fell to 4-1 in the POI while NV improved to 3-1. Mount Ayr saw their record slip to 6-3.
Wins over Nodaway Valley have been tough in recent meetings. The Raiderettes had won seven in a row coming into the game since January 2020.
On December 19, the Raiderettes stayed with the Wolverines early, trailing 21-13 after the first quarter. The Raiderettes trailed by eight points, 14-6 halfway through the first quarter, but cut the NV lead to four points, 17-13 with a minute left in the quarter. Nodaway Valley would end the quarter on a 4-0 run to build their eight-point lead back.
In the second quarter, Nodaway Valley led by double figures and extended their lead to 46-29 at halftime after out-scoring Mount Ayr 25-16 in the quarter. Both teams combined for 41 points in the quarter. Mount Ayr was as close at 11 points with a minute left in the half, only to see Nodaway Valley end the quarter on a 6-0 run.
After halftime, Mount Ayr struggled to put a dent in the Wolverines lead, as Nodaway Valley used a 22-7 run in the quarter to extend their lead to 68-36 after three quarters. Nodaway Valley would outscore Mount Ayr 16-7 in the final quarter to secure the win.
Izzy Gilbertson led Mount Ayr in scoring with 11 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 blocked shots. Gilbertson had seven of her points in the first half. Dannie Stewart and Breya Nickle each had 9 points. Four different Mount Ayr players made a three-pointer. They were Nickle with two, and Jaylee Shaffer, MaKel Jones, and Stewart each with one make.
Nodaway Valley had a pair of players score 25 points as senior Lindsey Davis and sophomore Izzy Eisbach. Jorja Holliday added 11 points and 8 rebounds. The Wolverines were on fire from the third-point line, making 11-of-27 attempts. Eisbach and Mylee Comstock each were 3-for-4, Davis and Maddie Weston each made two three-pointers and Holliday had one make. The Wolverines were also 13-for-15 from the free throw line whereas Mount Ayr was 4-for-10 from the line.
The two teams will play again in Mount Ayr on January 30. The Raiderettes will host Class 1A No. 3 Martensdale-St. Mary’s in their first game back from Christmas break, on January 5. The following two games are on the road at SW Valley on January 9 and at Central Decatur on January 11.
