The Mount Ayr boys’ wrestling team made the trip to Corning last Friday and Saturday to compete at the annual John J. Harris Invitational, hosted by SW Valley.
The meet is considered one of the premier meets in SW Iowa. There, the Raiders scored 34.5 team points and placed 19th.
There were 27 teams at the meet. Creston won the meet with a team score of 205 points. The Panthers won three weight classes at the meet. Atlantic was second with 141.5 points and Earlham was third with 139 points.
The Raiders are back on the mat on Tuesday, January 23 when they have dual meets against West Central Valley, Clarke, and Woodward-Granger.
The Raiders will be at the Central Decatur duals on February 3. The Raiders will wrestle at the District 9 tournament on Saturday, February 10 at Riverside. Schools in the Raiders district are AC/GC, AHSTW, CAM, Central Decatur, Coon Rapids-Bayard, Griswold, Lenox, Riverside, and SW Valley.
Raider Brock Shaha collected the top finish at the tournament, claiming a third-place finish in the 113-pound weight class.
Shaha improved to 24-4 on the season. Shaha was 4-1 at the event.
Shaha pinned Trae Hartwig from Denison in the second round to reach the quarterfinals. There, Shaha pinned 22-win Lane Travis from Creston in 1:20 to advance to the semifinals. In the semifinals, Shaha lost a 7-2 decision to Dallas Conoyer from Earlham.
That put Shaha in the consolation round. In the consolation semifinals, he pinned 25-win Brayden Maeder from SW Valley in 3:31 to advance to the third-place match.
The match was a match of two ranked wrestlers. Shaha is currently ranked No. 5 at 106 in Class 1A by IAWrestle.com while Maeder was ranked No. 11 at 113. In that match, he picked up a big win, pinning Atlantic’s Braxton Hass in 4:35. Hass had 33 wins coming into the match.
Also picking up a place win was Conlee Stark at 150. Stark improved to 24-11. Stark was 4-2 in six matches at the event.
Stark pinned Flynt Bell from SW Iowa in 0:47 in the second round to reach the quarterfinals. There, he lost by fall to Wayne’s Austin Henderson in 3:31. Stark battled back in the consolation round getting a tech fall 20-4 over Conner Williams from Clarke.
Stark then won a 6-2 decision over James Lemon from Denison to reach the consolation semifinals. There, he lost to Jax Jensen by fall in 2:56. In the fifth-place match, Stark exacted a measure of revenge, beating Wayne’s Austin Henderson by a 3-1 score to place fifth.
Also competing for the Raiders at the tournament, but not placing were Jeremiah Gilliland at 106, Tate Schaefer at 132, Ty Noble at 144, Bracken Collier at 165, and Jonathan Morales at 285. Morales, Noble, and Schaefer had only one match at the event. Collier was 0-2 in matches and Gilliland was also 0-2 in matches.
