The Mount Ayr boy’s basketball team is white hot at the right time as the regular season is concluding.
The Raider Boys won all four games they played last week to improve to 13-5 on the year. The 4-game win streak is the second for the Raiders this season.
The wins also all but guaranteed the Raiders will finish in second place in the POI this season as the Raiders conference record improved to 9-3.
Mount Ayr played Interstate-35 on Monday in their last regular season game.
The week began at Stanton where on paper, the match-up was even. There, the Raiders would survive a fourth-quarter rally by Stanton to win 73-70. Mount Ayr raced to a 29-18 lead after the first quarter.
The Raiders followed that up by out-scoring Stanton by eight points in the second quarter to build a 19-point halftime lead, 47-28. After halftime, Stanton chipped away at the lead, shaving off four points from the Raiders lead. It was the fourth quarter, however, that the Vikings used a 20-8 run to get dangerously close, but the Raiders were able to survive for the three-point win.
Jackson Ruggles led Mount Ayr in scoring with 27 points, 4 steals, and 4 assists. Tyler Martin scored 18 points and had 7 rebounds. Ryce Reynolds chipped in 12 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 steals.
Stanton had won two straight games before their loss to the Raiders.
Less than 24 hours later, Mount Ayr hosted Nodaway Valley in the first of three straight POI games to finish the week. Mount Ayr looked for the sweep over NV after owning an 81-40 win in Greenfield back in mid-December.
This time, the Wolverines hung tough considering they lost by 39 to Mount Ayr earlier. Mount Ayr led 16-7 after the first quarter and 30-12 at halftime. The third quarter was high scoring for both teams, but Mount Ayr held a 56-27 lead going to the final quarter. There, Nodaway Valley would outscore Mount Ayr 15-11. The win was the third straight for Mount Ayr over NV.
Jackson Ruggles scored 22 points to lead Mount Ayr. Tyler Martin added 14 points and nearly had a quadruple-double. Martin finished with 9 assists, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists.
In their second road game of the week, Mount Ayr traveled to Leon on Thursday, February 1 to take on the Cardinals. There, the Raiders came away with a big 18-point win, 66-48.
The Raiders would outscore Central Decatur in each quarter, leading 18-16 after the first and 33-26 at halftime. Mount Ayr would take a 45-37 lead to the final quarter. In the final quarter, the Raiders would be ten points better than the Cardinals in securing the win.
Jackson Ruggles scored a team-high 27 points including an 8-for-8 night from the free throw line. Ruggles also had 6 rebounds, 5 steals, and 2 assists. Tyler Martin scored 15 points and had 6 rebounds and Jaize Frost scored 11 points and had 5 rebounds. Nash Dykes and Dean Layton led Central Decatur in scoring with 15 and 10 points.
The week ended with a 10-point win over East Union at home 59-49.
The Raiders outscored the Eagles in every quarter by the final quarter. Mount Ayr led by seven after the first quarter and 32-21 at halftime. An 18-10 run in the third quarter gave the Raiders a 50-31 lead going to the final quarter.
Mount Ayr is 25-3 in the last 28 meetings going back to December of 2006. The win was the ninth straight for Mount Ayr over the Eagles.
Two Raiders hit for double figures in the game. Jackson Ruggles led with 22 points while Jaize Frost added 15 points and 9 rebounds. Tate Dugan chipped in 8 points and 9 rebounds. Seth Hudson and Austin Lack led the Eagles in scoring with 21 and 12 points. Lack had a double-double after grabbing a team-high 10 rebounds.
