The Mount Ayr boy’s basketball team is peaking at the right time as the postseason begins this week.
The Raiders wrapped their regular season schedule up last week with a non-conference win over Interstate-35 at home on senior night, 61-39.
The win was the fifth straight for Mount Ayr giving them an 8-3 record since Christmas break. Mount Ayr is 14-5 overall.
The Raiders played at home against SW Valley on Monday in the first round of the Class 1A District 14 tournament. The Raiders will look to win their 16th straight game over the Timberwolves since the 2016 season.
Mount Ayr wins over SW Valley of 55-46 and 60-54 this season during the regular season.
The winner of that game will play second-seeded Bedford or Sidney in a District 14 semi-final on Thursday at Bedford. The district final for District 14 is Tuesday, February 20, likely at top-seeded East Mills.
Mount Ayr led Interstate-35 17-10 after the first quarter in their game on Monday, February 5. An 18-7 run in the second quarter gave the Raiders a 35-17 halftime lead. From there, the Raiders cruised, outscoring the Roadrunners 26-22 in the second half. The win set the Raiders non-conference record at 4-2 in six games.
The Raiders shot nearly 46-percent from the floor in the game and were 17-for-21 from the free-throw line in the game. Three Raiders reached double figures in the contest. Jackson Ruggles and Tyler Martin each had 12 points and Tate Dugan added 11 points and 5 rebounds in the win. Juniors Louden Main and Jaize Frost led Mount Ayr in rebounding with 9 and 7 respectively. Senior Ryce Reynolds scored 7 points and had 4 rebounds and 4 assists.
