One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News,Thursday, March 12, 1924.)
Breezy Briefs of Tingley: There were twenty scholars out of high school on account of the measles last week and the grades were depleted in proportion.
Merritt News: Mr. and Mrs. Rex Sickels and daughter Dorothy Rexine spent Sunday with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E.G. Sickels.
Last Thursday afternoon fire which was started by sparks from the flue completely consumed the house on the Clarence Blair farm 3 miles north of Leasonville.
Two fire alarms in one evening were recorded Saturday.
Sparks from the flue set fire to the shingles at the I.J. Dalbey home. Members of the fire company and citizens responded quickly, but by the time they reached the scene Vitor Dalbey had climbed to the roof and had the flames subdued.
About an hour and half later the house in the west part of the city, owned by Isaac Himhoff and occupied by Vance Skinner and family was discovered in flames. It was consumed by the flames.
How many people in Iowa know that they must have a state breeder’s license before you can raise wild ducks, by placing wild duck eggs under a common hen?
The penalty is $10 for each bird. Permits must be secured from the department of fish and game.
A number of farmers in the vicinity of the state game farm on the old Flynn place a few miles west of Des Moines procure wild duck eggs from the state and hatch large numbers of them. On one farm last fall 100 wild mallards were sold at Thanksgiving time. These people secured a state permit.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

Meadow dies of wounds suffered in gun accident. Roland Meadows, a senior in the Kellerton high school, was struck in the back of the head by a shot gun blast while crow hunting with two companions.
The rank of Eagle Scout, the highest in the scouting field has been awarded to James Taff, high school sophomore of this city.
After trailing by 10 points during the second quarter, the Diagonal Maroons eked out a victory Thursday evening over the Grand River team, winning by only a 2 point margin, 39-37.
Ricker and Dentler accounted for 13 and 11 points for their respective teams.
The junior high made a study of traffic violations. They discovered the following violations: 13 bicycle violations; 1375 jaywalkers; 377 stop sign violations; 63 disobeyed signs. Total violations, 1828. We should all observe the traffic rules.
Mr. and Mrs. Merritt Reynolds returned Monday from a 6,500 mile trip and a four month’s visit to 9 southern and western states and Mexico.
Marriage: February 17, Denzel Walker and Virginia Lantz.
Birth: March 5, a son Thomas, to Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Parker.

Just a few days remain to secure tickets for the annual farmer-businessman’s banquet slated for Wednesday March 20, sponsored by the Mount Ayr Community Improvement club.
Guest speaker will be Russ Van Dyke, well known radio and television newsman from Des Moines. He will be speaking on “The Creditability Gap.”
State representative Quentin Anderson, Republican of Ellston, has announced he will not be a candidate for re-election to the house from the 94th district this year.
Grand Valley senior Terry Lesan has received a certificate of merit which confirms his standings as a finalist in the 1974 National Merit Scholarship competition.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

An early March snow storm brought much activity to a halt in Ringgold county Monday.
A total of 4” of snow was reported by the official weather reporting station near Mount Ayr and 7” of snow was reported in Beaconsfield.
MACHS will have two drill team members participating in the 1999 All-Iowa honor drill team, which will make it’s appearance at the girls state basketball tournament at Veterans Auditorium in Des Moines Saturday.
Jessica Hymbaugh and Callie Pherigo have been selected to represent Mount Ayr in the event.
Donna Olney Heyer of Tingley, a representative to the National Silver Haired Congress, returned February 23 to her winter home in Thatcher, AZ from a five day session with the congress in Washington, D.C. The National Silver Haired Congress is patterned after the United States Congress consisting of Silver Seniors and Silver Representatives from each state.

Mount Ayr Raider football coach, Delwyn Showalter, has won Positive Coaching Alliance’s coveted Double-Goal Coach award presented by Max Preps for his positive impact on youth athletics.
A 2012 Mount Ayr Community graduate is among 51 community college students from the United States and Canada and American Samoa to be named 2014 New Century Scholars.
Megan Doubleday, a Southwestern Community College sophomore is among the nationwide honorees. She will receive a $2,000 scholarship.
Supervisors set county salaries: County Attorney, $40,053; County Auditor, $40,883; County Recorder $40,883; County Treasurer $40,883; County Sheriff $54,442 and County Supervisors at $26,916.
