The Pride of Iowa Conference released their all-conference list for the 2023-24 season last week after the last POI team was eliminated from the postseason. On the list are four Mount Ayr Raiderettes.
Selected were juniors Jaxy Knight and Breya Nickle and freshmen Izzy Gilbertson and Dannie Stewart. Gilbertson, Nickle, and Knight were each a second-team selection while Stewart was on the honorable mention team.
Gilbertson was a unanimous selection for the season team after nearly averaging a double-double in POI play as a freshman with a 14.9 scoring average and a 9.3 rebound advantage. Gilbertson’s point total was the fifth-highest in POI games among all players.
Nickle was 10th in the POI in scoring with a 12.7 scoring average and 6.3 rebound average.
Knight averaged 10.3 points a game in POI games and was third in the POI in assists per league games with a 4.6 assist average.
Stewart averaged 8.8 points per POI game with 3.8 assists per game which was sixth in the league for POI games.
Martensdale-St. Mary’s won the POI this year with a 13-0 record. Nodaway Valley was second with a 12-1 record and Mount Ayr was third with a 10-3 record. Central Decatur tied with Lenox for fourth place with a POI record of 8-5.
The Blue Devils and Wolverines were state-ranked teams the whole season in Classes 1A and 2A. MTSM reached the 1A state tournament while the Wolverines lost one game away from the state in a 2A regional final.
The First team All-POI team was led by unanimous selections in seniors Brynnly German from Martensdale-St. Mary’s and Lindsey Davis from Nodaway Valley. German led the conference in assists per game in POI games with 94 and scored 15.0 points a game. Davis led the scoring in POI games with a 27.2-point scoring average in conference games. Other first-team selections were sophomore Izzy Eisbach from Nodaway Valley, junior Sadie Cox from Lenox, and seniors Sophia Shannon and Carolyn Amfahr from Martensdale-St. Mary’s.
The Raiderettes were third in the conference in scoring average, averaging 55.4 points per POI game this year, 34.2 rebounds per POI game, a league-high 19.5 assists, and 12.5 steals per outing.
Mount Ayr will return all of their five starters from their regional loss with Fremont-Mills.
Back from that game will be 2024-25 seniors Jaxy Knight, Breya Nickle, and sophomores Jaylee Shaffer, Dannie Stewart, and Izzy Gilbertson. Also back will be nine others from this year’s roster as the Raiderettes will be picked as a favorite in the POI race next year with one of the most veteran teams returning.
