The Mount Ayr girl’s track and field team got their first meet in the books after traveling to Iowa State University last week for the IATC indoor track championships.
There, sophomore Aubree Shields won the high jump and Mount Ayr’s shuttle hurdle relay team captured a top-10 finish.
The Raiderettes also had other events get times against quality foes and as the Raiderettes return to practice in preparing for the upcoming outdoor season, have a renewed vigor.
Shields won the high jump with a best jump of 5-feet, 3 inches. She was in the second flight of the event.
The high jump bar was set at 4-feet 5 inches to begin. Shields began attempts at 4-9 which she cleared on her first try. She also cleared 4-11 and 5-1 on first tries, only one of two competitors to accomplish that.
When the dust settled, four jumpers remained, Shields, Allie Fehr from West Bend Mallard, Tatum Huyser from Lynnville-Sully, and Alyssa Holthaus from South Winneshiek to attempt 5-3. Shields would be the only one to clear the height, and she did so on her final jump to claim the event.
The Raiderette’s shuttle hurdle relay team picked up a top-10 finish, placing ninth in a time of 46.23. Mount Ayr’s team was Breya Nickle, Dannie Stewart, MaKel Jones, and Shields. Northwood-Kensett won the event in a time of 40.05 while Fremont-Mills was second in 40.87.
Mount Ayr had two relays finish in the top-20 at the meet. The Raiderettes 4X400-meter relay team placed 15th and the 4X800-meter relay team placed 18th.
The 4X400-meter relay team of Aubree Shields, Tatum Friedrich, Ashlyn Murphy, and Aubree Clark were 15th in a time of 4:36.56. Riverside (Oakland) won the event in 4:17.08. Nodaway Valley was the other POI school in the event, placing 11th.
The 4X800-meter relay team of Kacie Larsen, Ashlyn Byer, Ivy Bice, and Addison Doolittle placed 18th in a time of 12:15.65. Tri-Center won the event in a time of 10:27.29.
Individually, Ashlyn Murphy placed 18th in the 400-meter dash in 1:07.56 and 22nd in the 200-meter dash in 30.12. Aubree Clark would add a 19th place finish in the 400-meter dash in 1:07.97.
The Raiderettes had three other competitors in field events. In the long jump, MaKel Jones placed 25th with a best jump of 12-feet, 10.5 inches while Dannie Stewart placed 28th with a best jump of 12-feet, 5 inches. Adley Dredge competed in the shot put where she placed 31st with a best throw of 25-feet, 10.25 inches.
