Raiderettes win three matches

The Mount Ayr Raiderettes had a busy week of matches last week including their first POI matches of the year.
In eight matches, they were 3-5 to set their record at 4-7 going into this week. Mount Ayr plays twice this week. Mount Ayr will play at home in a POI triangular meet with Central Decatur and Wayne coming in.
The Raiderettes also will host a volleyball tournament on September 21. Teams coming to town are Clarke, East Mills, Interstate-35, Lamoni, Martensdale-St. Mary’s, Murray, and SE Warren.
The week began with the Raiderettes with their first Pride of Iowa Conference matches in a triangular at East Union.
There, the Raiderettes split two matches. The Raiderettes lost to SW Valley in three sets and beat East Union in two sets.
Mount Ayr fell in three sets to SW Valley. The Timberwolves won the first set 25-13 to take a 1-0 match lead. Mount Ayr tied the match at 1-1 with a second-set win, 25-18. In the deciding third set, SW Valley won a close one, 15-13.
Mount Ayr had 59 attacks and 13 kills from those attacks. Aubree Shields led with 23 attacks and five kills. Jaxy Knight had 11 attacks and two kills while Ashlyn Murphy had 10 attacks and two kills. Izzy Gilbertson added three kills.
Mount Ayr had 47 digs led by Olivia Huntington with 12 and Breya Nickle with nine. Mount Ayr served 47-for-50 with seven aces. Jaylee Shaffer led, going 13-for-14 with two aces.
Against the Eagles, Mount Ayr won the first set 25-10 and 25-21. The win gave the Raiderettes a record of 2-3. Mount Ayr had 36 attacks in the match with 16 kills. Breya Nickle led with 12 attacks and five kills. Aubree Shields and Izzy Gilbertson each had seven attacks with Shields getting five kills and Gilbertson four. Jaylee Shaffer led in assists with eight while Dannie Stewart had six.
Mount Ayr had 27 digs led by Shields and Olivia Huntington with nine each. Mount Ayr also had a match where they served 45-for-49 with 11 aces as a team. Dannie Stewart led going 12-for-12 with three aces. Breya Nickle was 7-for-8 with five aces and Jaylee Shaffer was 7-for-7 with an ace serve.
On Thursday, Mount Ayr hosted Pleasantville and Clarke in a triangular. The Raiderettes beat Clarke 2-0 by scores of 25-18 and 25-12 but lost to Pleasantville 2-1.
Against the Trojans, Mount Ayr lost the first set 25-20 but tied the match at 1-1 with a second set win, 25-20. In the third and deciding set, Mount Ayr fell 16-14 in a close set. Mount Ayr had 69 attacks in the match with 23 kills.
Aubree Shields had 29 attacks and 14 kills while Breya Nickle had 13 attacks and two kills and Izzy Gilbertson had 12 attacks and four kills. Jaylee Shaffer led with 10 assists. Mount Ayr had 36 digs led by Ashlyn Murphy, Breya Nickle, and Aubree Shields with 8 digs each. The Raiderettes served 56-for-60 with an ace. Ashlyn Murphy led Mount Ayr with a 17-for-17, 1-ace match. Jaylee Shaffer followed, going 15-for-15.
Against Clarke, Mount Ayr had 48 attacks and 25 kills. Breya Nickle led with 12 attacks and 7 kills followed by Ashlyn Murphy with 11 attacks and 6 kills. Aubree Shields added nine attacks and six kills.
Dannie Stewart had 13 assists and Jaylee Shaffer had nine. Mount Ayr had 27 digs in the match led by Jaxy Knight with seven and Abby Larson with six. Mount Ayr served 44-for-49 as a team with two aces. Ashlyn Murphy led, going 13-for-13 with 1 ace.
On Saturday, September 14, the Raiderettes played in four matches at the Shenandoah tournament. There, the Raiderettes beat Bedford 2-0 by scores of 21-19 and 21-16. Mount Ayr lost to East Mills 2-0 by scores of 21-14 and 21-16, to Sidney 2-0 by scores of 21-10 and 21-8, and to Missouri Valley 2-0 by scores of 21-8 and 21-13.
