The second-ranked team in Class A needed a big second half to pull away from Mount Ayr last Friday in a 40-14 win at home.
The Chargers are ranked No. 2 in Class A by the Iowa High School Athletic Association’s ranking committee. The Chargers are ranked No. 1 in the Radio Iowa Class A poll. AC/GC improved to 7-0 with the win while Mount Ayr fell to 5-2.
The Raiders will play at Martensdale-St. Mary’s Friday in their regular season finale.
The loss was the first in four games for Mount Ayr as they saw their three-game win streak snapped. The Raiders came into the game off of a big 38-18 win on senior night over Lynnville-Sully, another Class A playoff team.
“We are going to get back to work this week. I think we closed the gap against them and that is what we wanted to see,” said Mount Ayr coach Ryan Victor.
“We know we have more football left after this week, but we would like to gear up for the postseason with our last district game,” he said.
The first half was a good one as Mount Ayr trailed only 14-8 at halftime. The Chargers scored the first points of the game with 6:46 left in the first quarter on a Mike Fuller 5-yard run for a 7-0 lead.
Later in the half, with 6:20 left before halftime, Jathan South scored on an 18-yard run to give the Chargers a 14-0 lead. Mount Ayr would not be denied points in the first half, scoring their first touchdown with 26 seconds left in the half on a 3-yard Trevin Victor run.
The two-point run by Dyson Thompson was good and the Raiders went to the halftime break down 14-8.
AC/GC would score twice in the third quarter to get the score to 26-8 going to the final quarter. A 42-yard run by Brexton Schneider and an 87-yard run by Eli Madsen accounted for the touchdowns.
The Chargers would score their third and fourth straight touchdown in the fourth quarter to pull away from the Raiders and take a 40-8 lead. Mount Ayr would add a late touchdown on a Tate Dugan 34-yard pass from Trevin Victory to get the score to its final of 40-14.
The two teams met twice last year. AC/GC won both games winning a 42-18 regular season game at Mount Ayr and again winning 34-18 in the postseason. The Chargers defense has stepped up this year allowing 19 points a game from opponents.
The Raiders were without starting quarterback Jackson Ruggles in the game. Ruggles was held out of the game due to an injury from the week before. In his place, a pair of Raiders filled in and did not throw an interception. Senior Trevin Victor and Tyler Martin combined to throw for 149 yards on 4-of-8 completions with one touchdown pass.
The Raiders rushed for 151 yards on 37 carries and had one rushing score. Dyson Thompson and Tyler Martin led with 10 carries each for 56 and 21 yards.
Tate Dugan rushed 9 times for ten yards and Victor had a team-high 64 rushing yards on eight carries and a touchdown. Dugan led Raider receivers with 3 receptions for 95 yards and a touchdown. Thompson hauled in one pass for 54 yards.
Defensively, Mount Ayr was led by Tyler Martin with 5 tackles while Dyson Thompson, Garrett Walter, and Trace Knapp all had 4.5 tackles. Louden Main intercepted a pass and returned it 25 yards.
The Chargers ran for 442 yards in the game and had two rushers over 100 yards and two others nearly over 100 yards. Joe Crawford rushed for 106 yards on six carries and Mike Fuller rushed 14 times for 102 yards. Five different Chargers scored rushing touchdowns. Fuller passed for 60 yards and a touchdown in the game. Defensively, Xander Harwood led the Chargers with 9.5 tackles while Ben Franzeen with 5, and Joe Crawford, Taytum Bates each had 4.5 tackles.
Mount Ayr travels to Martensdale-St. Mary’s Friday to play the Blue Devils in their final district game of the year.
MTSM comes in looking for their first win of the season with a record of 0-7. Junior quarterback Jack Gavin has passed for 907 yards on 59 completions with eight touchdown passes. Senior Wesley Turner leads MTSM in rushing with 192 yards on 59 carries with one touchdown. Junior Travis White is the top MTSM receiver with 32 receptions for 586 yards and three touchdowns. Two other Blue Devils have over 15 catches for over 200 receiving yards and at least two touchdowns.
Defensively, MTSM is led by Travis White with 48.5 tackles and Colton Wright with 34 tackles.
Mount Ayr has qualified for the playoffs and will be the second seed out of Class A District 6. Madrid is the district champion. The Raiders will play a home playoff game a week from Friday, October 25 against a team to be determined. The other playoff qualifiers will be Lynnville-Sully and Wayne.
