Draw Lenox to start tournament play next week
The Mount Ayr Raiderettes improved to 15-15 with a pair of match wins last week in 24 hours.
Mount Ayr beat non-conference foe Murray on Monday, October 7, and beat Wayne 3-0 on Tuesday, October 8.
The Raiderettes will play this Monday and Tuesday in the Pride of Iowa Conference tournament.
Against Murray, Mount Ayr took command of the match in the first set, winning 25-9 for a 1-0 lead. Mount Ayr took a 2-0 lead with a 25-11 second set win. In the third set, Mount Ayr would claim the match winning the set, 25-19.
Murray came into the match having won two matches in a row. Mount Ayr came into the match off of a win over Nodaway Valley that snapped a three-match losing streak.
Mount Ayr had 85 attacks and 31 kills in the match.
Izzy Gilbertson had 20 attacks and 5 kills, Aubree Shields had 18 attacks and a team-high 11 kills, and Ashlyn Murphy had 16 attacks and 9 kills. Breya Nickle and Anna Greenland each had 3 kills in the match.
Defensively, Mount Ayr had 51 digs led by Jaxy Knight with 19 and Aubree Shields with 13.
Jaylee Shaffer had 18 assists and 8 digs in the match. Dannie Stewart also had 10 assists. Mount Ayr served 66-for-73 as a team with 18 aces. Ashlyn Murphy was 17-for-18 with 7 aces. Stewart was 14-for-14 with two aces while Shaffer was 13-for-13 with two aces and Breya Nickle was 13-for-13 with two aces.
Against Wayne, Mount Ayr had 92 attacks and 23 kills from those attacks. Aubree Shields had a team-high 23 attacks and 9 kills to lead Mount Ayr.
Breya Nickle was next with 20 attacks and 6 kills. Ashlyn Murphy and Izzy Gilbertson each had 4 kills. Setter Jaylee Shaffer led in assists with 14 while Dannie Stewart added 6. Defensively, Mount Ayr had 61 digs. Shields led with 20 digs and Jaxy Knight was next with 17. Murphy added 6 while Stewart, Abby Larson, and Shaffer all had 4 digs.
Mount Ayr served 68-for-73 in the match with 14 aces. Shields was the top Mount Ayr server, going 19-for-21 with four aces. Ashlyn Murphy served 19-for-19 with a pair of aces. Dannie Stewart had three ace serves while Knight, and Nickle each had 2 and Shaffer had 1.
Mount Ayr won their third in a row with the win while Wayne lost for the fourth time in five matches.
The Falcons had won two POI matches, one against East Union and the other against Martensdale-St. Mary’s, prior to their match with the Raiderettes.
The Raiderettes found out last week their postseason destination. The Raiderettes will play at Lenox on Monday, October 21 in the first round of the Region 6 tournament. That match will begin at 7:00 p.m. The Tigers beat Mount Ayr 2-0 in a Pride of Iowa Conference triangular back on September 24.
