Two longtime rivals met last Thursday in Mount Ayr in a non-conference game for the first time as Bedford came to town.
The two longtime rivals put on another good show, but it was the road team that would best the Raiders by two points, 47-45.
Bedford and Mount Ayr were both unbeaten before the outcome. The Bulldogs have scored 65 or more points in each of their four previous games including a 93-point output in a win over Essex.

Mount Ayr fell to 3-1. Bedford has won three in a row over Mount Ayr and four of their last five over Mount Ayr.
“We are two of the better groups coming out of SW Iowa right now. We had some battles with Bedford. Then you add Lenox and you knew it was going to be some good games. This year, you are looking at two of the top-20 teams in 1A,” said Mount Ayr head coach Bret Ruggles.
Bedford controlled the first quarter take a 16-8 lead after the opening quarter. In the second quarter, Bedford extended their lead to 14 points, 30-16 at halftime. In the second half, the Raiders tightened up their defense allowing Bedford only seven third-quarter points.
The Raiders would make a comeback in the final quarter, out-scoring Bedford 21-10. The Raiders were close to the end with Bulldogs, but could not get past the two-point difference on the final scoreboard.
“They got out early, but we did a good job of fighting back,” said Ruggles.
“It was a weird night having a huge rival in town. It felt like everything of old, like an old conference game, but at the end of the night, it was a non-conference game,” he said.
Mount Ayr was led by Jackson Ruggles with 20 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists. Tate Dugan added 10 points and 9 rebounds to lead Mount Ayr. The Raiders made two three-pointers in the game and shot 81 percent from the free-throw line.
Bedford was led by two players in double figures as Brody King scored 17 and Cal Peterman scored 14 points, grabbed 8 rebounds, and had 5 steals and 3 assists. Marcus Knighton added 6 points. The Bulldogs made five three-pointers in the game.
The Raiders game at SE Warren scheduled for last Friday, has been rescheduled to January 16.
The Raiders have a three-game week, hosting Wayne on Tuesday and Southwest Valley on Thursday. The Raiders play at Worth County Friday in their last game before Christmas break.
