The two teams have been used to playing each other for many years, however, last Thursday’s non-conference game with Bedford was just different.
There, the Mount Ayr Raiderettes and Bedford Bulldogs met not as POI members, but in a non-conference game. Bedford left the POI after last school year to join the Corner Conference. Last Thursday, the Raiderettes beat their former conference rival, 64-24. The win was the fifth straight to start the season for Mount Ayr who improved to 5-0.
“It was different this, not being a conference game. We will keep them on the schedule. It is a rival for us and we have had some good games over the year,” said Mount Ayr head coach Thad Streit.
“We could have played a little better, we didn’t play too explosively as we wanted. We got the win and that is important,” said Streit.

The Raiderettes used a 15-0 run in the first quarter to take a big lead after the first quarter. Mount Ayr followed that up with another 15-point quarter to take a 22-point, 30-8 lead at halftime. The Raiderettes scored 17 points in each of the third and fourth quarters to sew up the win.
Bedford fell to 2-3 on the season and have lost 17 straight to Mount Ayr. The Bulldogs have wins over Essex and Murray so far and have lost to Sidney and Stanton. Their 49 points scored against Stanton has been a season high and the Bulldogs have not scored over 40 points since.

Izzy Gilbertson
Mount Ayr had two players reach double digits. Izzy Gilbertson had 10 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 blocked shots. Dannie Stewart had 10 points, 4 assists, and 3 steals. MaKel Jones and Jaylee Shaffer each had 8 points. Sophomores Tatum Friedrich and Keely Wasteney each had 6 points off the bench.
Bedford’s leading scorers were sophomores Caroline Simmons and MaKayla Nicholas with 8 points each. Nicholas had 7 rebounds and Aniya Hardee had 6 rebounds.
The Raiderettes were to play Wayne at home Tuesday in a key Pride of Iowa Conference ball game. The Raiderettes play twice more with another home game against SW Valley on Thursday before playing at Worth County Friday.
Pre-Christmas finals are this week for Mount Ayr students.
“Wayne will be tough. They have fast track kids and are good rebounders. The end of the week, going to Worth County will be a nice game. We have played them for a few years and it is a good game for both schools,” said Streit.
