The Mount Ayr girl’s basketball team is going into the Christmas holiday break with an 8-game win streak and a state ranking in Class 1A.
The Raiderettes won all three of their games last week to improve to 8-0 overall and 4-0 in the Pride of Iowa Conference. Mount Ayr is the only team in the conference who has not lost in POI play.
The week began with a statement win by Mount Ayr. The Raiderettes dismantled the Wayne Falcons at home, 60-32. The Falcons came to the game on a two-game win streak and four wins. That wasn’t enough to keep up with Mount Ayr.
The Raiderettes scored 31 first half points and led by 17 at halftime in the win. A 13-7 third quarter run dashed Falcon comeback hopes.
Three Mount Ayr players reached double figures in the win. Breya Nickle led with 18 points and 7 rebounds. Jaylee Shaffer scored 11 points and had 6 assists. Shaffer’s point total included going 3-for-5 from the three-point line. Dannie Stewart chipped in 10 points.
Two nights later the Raiderettes made up a game with SW Valley at home in their last POI game before Christmas break.
The Raiderettes would hold off a SWV run in the first half where the Timberwolves trailed just 27-24 with 4 minutes left before halftime. An 11-0 run over the final four minutes of the second quarter would give the Raiderettes a 38-24 halftime lead. Mount Ayr would outscore SW Valley 27-24 in the second half.
Mount Ayr got 18 points and 7 rebounds from Breya Nickle and 14 points and 6 rebounds from Izzy Gilbertson to lead the way. Jaylee Shaffer chipped in 9 points.
Mount Ayr traveled to Worth County on Friday night for a non-conference game. There, the Raiderettes won 58-17 over the Tigers.
Mount Ayr used a 14-3 run in the first quarter to take an 11-point lead after the first quarter. A 25-10 second quarter run gave the Raiderettes a 39-13 halftime lead. Mount Ayr cruised from there.
There were no statistics available at presstime for either team.
