At their regular meeting Monday, January 13, the Ringgold County board of supervisors approved a new four-year law enforcement contract with the City of Mount Ayr.
(The contract will come before the Mount Ayr city council for its approval at its meeting Wednesday, January 15, but due to publication deadlines, the decision of council was not available for this week’s paper.)
The wording of the contract is nearly identical to the existing contract between the county and city. It extends the 28E agreement for the Ringgold County Sheriff’s Office to provide law enforcement services for the city in order to ensure the city’s compliance with Iowa law.
The new contract runs from July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2029.
The main difference between the existing contract and the new contract comes in the area of compensation. During the first year of the existing four-year contract dated June 2021, the city agreed to pay the county $180,000, with 4 percent increases for each subsequent year based on the prior year’s amount. For example, in the current fiscal year, the fourth year of the existing contract, the city pays approximately $202,000. Payments were made quarterly.
The new contract increases the annual payment to $250,000 in the first year with 6 percent increases in each subsequent year based on the prior year’s amount. Payments will be made in monthly installments.
In both contracts, the yearly payment includes allocations for FICA, IPERS, and other benefits.
The contract may be terminated by either party by written notice received by December 1 with termination effective on June 30 of the following year.
