Remain undefeated on season
The Mount Ayr girl’s basketball team improved to 14-0 overall and 10-0 in the Pride of Iowa Conference last week, winning three big conference games over Central Decatur, Nodaway Valley, and SE Warren.
The Raiderettes played the second of five road games Monday night at Murray, winning 47-26. Mount Ayr will play at SW Valley on Tuesday and at Wayne Friday. A big game with Lenox looms on January 28 at Lenox.
The week started out with the first meeting of the year against Central Decatur. The Cardinals have put together a nice season and are one of the top defensive teams in the POI this year. Last Monday however, the Raiderettes handed the Cardinals a 61-45 loss at home.
The two teams will meet again in Leon on February 4.
Mount Ayr led by eight points, 17-9 after the first quarter. The Cardinals would score their most points in any of the quarters in the second quarter, but Mount Ayr would put up 16 points of their own to take a 33-22 halftime lead. The Raiderettes extended their lead to 48-33 after four quarters and secured the win in the fourth.
Mount Ayr shot 44-percent from the floor in the game, and turned up the defense on the Cardinals forcing them into a 25-percent shooting night on 60 total shot attempts. The win was the first for either team to win back-to-back games since the 2019 season. Since the 2019 season through February of 2024, every other game went to the Raiderettes. Three Mount Ayr players reached double figures led by Jaxy Knight with 17 points including 3-for-4 from the three-point line. Breya Nickle had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds and Dannie Stewart added 12 points, 5 steals, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists.
Less than 24 hours later, the Raiderettes were back on their home court for their second game with Nodaway Valley this season. Mount Ayr beat the Wolverines 65-31 on the first night of the POI season, snapping a 9-game losing streak to NV going back to the 2020 season.
Mount Ayr would earn the sweep of the season series with an 88-57 win to go to 2-0 on the week.
Mount Ayr scored 20 or more points in three of the four quarters and led 42-31 at halftime. The Raiderettes outscored the Wolverines 46-26 in the second half.
Mount Ayr had a balanced attack with four players reaching double figures. Breya Nickle had a season best 29 points and 11 rebounds to lead Mount Ayr. Nickle was 10-for-15 from the floor and 8-for-9 from the free throw line in the game. Dannie Stewart scored 14 points, Izzy Gilbertson had a double-double with 13 points and 18 rebounds, and Jaylee Shaffer scored 12 points and had 6 rebounds.
Nodaway Valley junior guard Izzy Eisbach poured in 51 points in the game including making nine three pointers to score all but six of the Wolverines points in the game. The 88 points by Mount Ayr are a new season high after the Raiderettes scored 86 in a season opening win over Lamoni back in November.
The week ended for the Raiderettes with a 68-30 win at SE Warren in a game that was postponed from December 13. It was the first meeting this season between the schools and SE Warren will be in town on January 31 for the second of two games this year.
Mount Ayr had a slow start in the game, taking just an 8-4 lead after the first quarter. However, a 21-9 second quarter run gave the Raiderettes a 29-13 halftime lead. Mount Ayr put the game away in the third quarter using a 28-10 run to set the score at 57-23 after three quarters.
For the second straight game, the Raiderettes had four players reach double figures. Dannie Stewart led with 15 points and 7 assists. Seniors Breya Nickle and Jaxy Knight each had 14 points and Izzy Gilbertson had a double-double with 13 points and 15 rebounds.
