CLARINDA – The Mount Ayr volleyball team began their season last week at the Clarinda Volleyball Triangular on Tuesday, August 26. The Raiderettes got three matches in to start the season against Clarinda, Stanton, and Lenox. At the meet, Mount Ayr went 1-2 with their win over POI rival Lenox. Mount Ayr fell 2-0 to Clarinda, 2-1 to Stanton and beat Lenox 2-0.
Mount Ayr was one of six Pride of Iowa Conference schools to get a win in the first week of matches. SE Warren and Nodaway Valley won the most with six and three wins while Southwest Valley had a pair of wins. East Union, Martensdale-St. Marys, and Mount Ayr all won one match. SE Warren continues to be ranked in the latest IGHSAU poll for Class 1A at No. 12.
Mount Ayr hosted Bedford Tuesday night in their POI and home opener. Mount Ayr will be back in action Saturday at the Clarke volleyball kickoff meet. Teams at the event are Central Decatur, Chariton, Des Moines Lincoln, Lamoni, Melcher-Dallas, SE Warren, Mount Ayr, and Clarke. The Raiderettes have a big match to start the following week, traveling to Southwest Valley on September 9.
Against Clarinda, the Raiderettes lost both sets in the match by scores of 21-12 and 21-10. Clarinda had dominated Mount Ayr in meetings since 2007 winning 16 straight matches with the win. Aubree Shields had 7 kills in 16 attacks and Jaylee Shaffer had 10 assists. Mount Ayr served 18-for-22 as a team with two aces. Abby Larson led, going 6-for-6.
Against Stanton, Mount Ayr won the first set 21-9 to take a 1-0 match lead. Stanton tied the match at 1-1 with a 21-18 second set win. In the third set, Stanton won 15-13 to claim the match. Mount Ayr had 29 kills in the match with Shields getting 17 on 27 attacks. Shaffer had 22 assists. Mount Ayr served 50-for-52 with 5 aces. Shaffer and Emma Reynolds each had ten successful serves in the match.
Against Lenox, Mount Ayr swept their POI foes by scores of 21-14 and 21-11. The two teams will possibly meet again at the Shenandoah tournament on September 13. The two teams will play on September 23 in Mount Ayr at a POI triangular, and could always meet again in the POI tournament in October. Mount Ayr had 16 kills in 41 attacks, 24 digs and served 35-for-41 with six aces in the match.
