MOUNT AYR – The Mount Ayr volleyball program hosted its annual volleyball tournament on Saturday, September 20. There, Mount Ayr won two of their four matches beating Interstate-35 and Lamoni before falling to Centerville and East Mills.
The wins saw Mount Ayr improve to 15-8 overall. Mount Ayr will play at the Bedford Tournament this Saturday. Teams there will be Bedford, East Mills, East Union, Lamoni, Mount Ayr, Sidney, Stanton, and Mid-Buchanan.
Mount Ayr beat Interstate-35 2-0 by scores of 21-10 and 21-18. Mount Ayr had 40 attacks and 16 kills. Aubree Shields had 19 attacks and 9 kills to lead Mount Ayr. Jaylee Shaffer had 17 assists and Kate Newton led in digs with 7. Mount Ayr as a team served 34-for-41 with 9 aces. Emma Reynolds led going 14-for-14 with 4 aces. Shaffer also had four aces.
Mount Ayr beat Lamoni 2-0 by scores of 21-10 and 21-10. Mount Ayr had 34 attacks and had 20 kills from those attacks. Aubree Shields had 9, Izzy Gilbertson had 6, and Jaylee Shaffer and Dannie Stewart each had 2. Shaffer had 14 assists and Abby Larson led in digs with 3. Mount Ayr served 39-for-41 with 10 aces. Stewart was 10-for-10 with 3 aces. Aubree Shields and Gilbertson each had 3 aces in the match.
Mount Ayr lost to Centerville 2-0 by scores of 21-11 and 21-19. Mount Ayr had 67 attacks in the match with 12 kills. Jaylee Shaffer had 13 assists and Aubree Shields had 7 kills on 32 attacks. Shields had 11 digs and Dannie Stewart had 10 digs. Mount Ayr served 27-for-31 in the match with 2 aces. Shields led 9-for-9.
Centerville had 9 kills led by Matty Kovacecich with 4 and 11 digs. Centerville served 38-for-41 with 7 aces led by Taya Belloam who was 12-for-12 with 2 aces.
Mount Ayr lost to East Mills 25-8 and 25-17. East Mills improved to 14-3 with the win. Mount Ayr had 61 attacks and 13 kills from those attacks. Aubree Shields had 31 attacks and 10 kills while Izzy Gilbertson had 12 attacks and 2 kills. Jaylee Shaffer led in assists with 13 and Shields led in digs with 11. Mount Ayr served 19-for-26 with an ace. Abby Larson led going 7-for-8 with an ace serve.
The Wolverines had 19 kills led by sophomore Ellie Hagen with 7. Brynn Williams had 7 assists and the Wolverines served 46-for-48 with 5 aces. Ruby Hastle led going 11-for-12.
