Mount Ayr picks up first district win
By Ryan Stonebraker
LEON – A big first half by Mount Ayr fueled a lopsided 64-6 road win over Cardinals 64-6 last Friday in Leon.
Big plays helped the Raiders with the win as they scored seven touchdowns of 40 or more yards and another touchdown that went for 39 yards.
Mount Ayr won its first district game and are 1-1 in the district and improved to 2-3 overall. Leon, meanwhile, fell to 1-3 in District 7 and 2-3 overall.
Raiders coach Ryan Victor said that his team needed this win.
“We had to pay the piper the first three weeks and played a very tough schedule,” he said. “We needed this win tonight.”
Mount Ayr’s foes in the first four weeks have a combined record of 13-2.
“We were ready to play and our kids were hungry and that is what it will take this week too against a good AHSTW team,” Victor said of the upcoming Homecoming foe.
Mount Ayr took control of the football game early on jumping out to a 28-0 first-quarter lead. A pair of Jackson Ruggles touchdown passes and a long touchdown run by the quarterback went with a long scoring run from Dyson Thompson to get the point total. All four first quarter touchdowns were big plays of at least 42 yards each score.
Ruggles connected with Adler Reed on a 57-yard touchdown pass with 9:38 left in the first quarter for the first Raider score. On the next Mount Ayr drive, Ruggles scampered 54 yards for a big touchdown run and 14-0 lead. With 3:34 left in the quarter, Ruggles connected with Tate Dugan on a 45-yard scoring pass for a 22-0 lead. Finally, with 1:12 left in the quarter, Thompson got free on a 42-yard scoring run to give the Raiders a 28-0 lead.
The Raiders added three second half touchdowns for 22 second-quarter points, including two Ruggles scoring runs of 63 and two yards. Ruggles also tossed his second long scoring pass of the night to help Mount Ayr take a 50-0 halftime lead. The 35-point running clock mercy rule was activated in the first half.
The Raiders scored twice in the second half, one score in each quarter. Dugan scored on a 39-yard run in the third and Bryson Martin added a 67-yard touchdown run in the fourth to extend the lead to 64-0 with 9:06 left in the game. The Cardinals scored their only points with 5:06 left in the game.
The Raiders had 19 first downs and 591 total yards with 404 yards rushing and 187 passing yards. Mount Ayr had a pair of rushers top the century mark. Dugan rushed for 118 yards and a touchdown. Ruggles had a monster game having a part in six of the Raiders touchdowns. The senior rushed for 115 yards with four touchdowns on the ground and passed for two more touchdowns. Reed led the offense with a pair of catches with 72 yards. Defensively, Mount Ayr was led in tackles by Dugan with five and Nathan Roemer with four.
The Raiders held Leon to 10 first downs and 150 yards of total offense, which is the team’s lowest output this season. The Cardinals had negative rushing yards as a team and Mount Ayr limited the prolific Cardinals passing attack to 170 yards in the game.
Cardinal quarterback Asher Norman passed for 170 yards on 20 completions with a touchdown. Paxon Applegate led the Cardinals with 10 receptions with 75 yards. Applegate caught a 19-yard scoring pass. The Cardinals leading rusher was Mason Allen with three yards on two carries.
The Raiders will now play at home against AHSTW Friday. The Vikings have won three of their last four games including last Friday night 49-12 over Southwest Valley. The Vikings currently hold the No. 3 spot in the district with a 2-1 record and are 3-2 overall.
The district race for the third and fourth playoff spot are up for grabs and Friday’s game will have an impact. If the Raiders can beat AHSTW, they will be in a good spot having only SW Valley and Nodaway Valley left in the regular season. Currently, Mount Ayr, SW Valley, Central Decatur and Nodaway Valley all have one district win.
The Vikings have almost 1,500 yards of total offense through five games. AHSTW’s offense is guided by sophomore quarterback Dayton Osbahr who has passed for 512 yards on 31 completions with five touchdowns. He has also thrown five interceptions. The Vikings have rushed for almost 1,000 yards as a team. Seniors Drew Lee leads with 492 yards on 42 carries with eight touchdowns and Gatlin Gettler has rushed for 243 yards on 33 carries with seven touchdowns. Lee averages 11.7 yards a carry and Gettler 7.4 yards per rush. The top receiver for AHSTW is senior Collin Harder who has 12 catches for 262 yards and two touchdowns. Lee also has 109 yards on five catches and another touchdown.
“AHSTW is well coached. They are prepared on both sides of the football,” Victor said. “They have some athletes and put them in spots where they can be successful. They will be physical. No matter the record, we expect them to give us everything they got. We have to be sound and tough on the line.”
Defensively, AHSTW has four players with over 20 tackles. Gettler leads with 26 followed by Lee with 24, Sam Sturm with 23 and Cash Freeman with 22.5. Senior lineman Kaden Jorgensen has three sacks and junior linebacker Jackson Jensen with two sacks. Five different Vikings have recovered a fumble, and four different players have interceptions. AHSTW punter Dayton Osbahr averages 35.3 yards a punt.
