One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News, Thursday, October 28, 1925.)
The proposition of issuing bonds in the sum of $150,000 for the purpose of building a court house for Ringgold County will be submitted at a special election to be held Tuesday, December 1.
The weather department seems to have completely lost control of October, which has been incorrigible from birth. No Indian summer; no mild temperature accompanied by a flood of sunshine; none of that calm gentle slipping from summer to winter. Just about fourteen hours of genuine October weather thus far during the month; and to cap the climax along came a snow yesterday accompanied by a cold wave. Local weather observer Maxwell looked at the thermometer early this morning and found the record 5 degrees above zero.
Under the provisions of the child welfare laws passed by the 41st general assembly county clerks are prohibited from issuing marriage licenses to those tainted with imbecility, insanity or idiocy. E.H. Sanda, director of the child welfare department of the state board of control is completing a list of those coming under the ban of the law, by counties. Under the list prepared are appeoximately 100,000 names. A revision of this list will probably greatly reduce the number as many deaths have occurred since data from which the list is collected was compiled. The list is furnished to every county clerk in the state.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

The grand opening of Firestone’s Toyland is being held today (Thursday), according to Darrell and Bill Johnston. “This year it will be bigger and better than before, Say the Johnstons.”
While opening the toys and Christmas gifts we became so fasinated that we examined ever item very carefully. We can now tell you with great assurance that we have the best seletion of toys and gifts we have ever offered the public.
A 13 year-old Mount Ayr girl, who says she sings her best while riding her horse, won the Roy Rogers amateur talent contest, the final round of which was broadcast Saturday on radio station KRNT, Des Moines. She is Renabell Elmore, daughter of Mr. and Mrs, Art Elmore.
Roy Lepley this week became a partner of Clifford Lungren in the ownership of th Mount Ayr Livstock Market after buying the half interest in the business held by John Vanderflught.
Something new in athletic shows in this community will be girls wrestling matches scheduled for Wednesday night November 8 at 8:30 o’clock at the sale pavillion in Mount Ayr.

Joan Fisher, a Mount Ayr Community high school sophmore and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Fisher of Mount Ayr will be participating in an all-state chorus November 22 after being selected at a district audition held October 25. This is the second straight year she has been selected.
Marriage: September 21, Sue Lawson and Jerold Adams.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

Finish work is being completed on Clearview Estates the new assisted living apartment building which adjoins Clearview Homes in Mount Ayr. The new building has ten one bedroom and 2 two bedroom apartments for people who need some assistance but do not need the 24 hour nursing care of a nursing home setting.
The most Mount Ayr FFA chapter members to receivee their America FFA degrees in one year were honored at the National FFA Convention in Louisville, KY, this past week.
The America FFA degrees were presented to John Tidman, Reggie Derscheid, and Tim Creveling.
Between June 30 and October 9 Patricia Cole of Mount Ayr was the Iowa Lottery’s biggest lotto winner in Ringgold County, winning $5,000 in the powerball game.
Lynn’s Texaco Food Mart was Ringgold County’s hottest Iowa retailer. Lottery players were paid more than $5,000 in prizes at this retail center.
A Mount Ayr community high school 8th grader has been selected to play in the Southwest Iowa Honor Band for junior high students after auditions held in Clarinda Saturday. Katie Weddle, daughter of Dr. Dan and Kristie Weddle of Mount Ayr, will be playing clarinet with the 8th grade honor band this year.

Ten Years Ago

Mount Ayr had eight candidates vying for three seats on the city council and the candidates with the top three vote totals have been elected to council. Brad Elliott, Ken Robertson, and Don Solliday were the top three vote getters. Incumbents Gerald Cannon and Wes Mathany were voted out.
City booster station may be poorly designed. City wants answers from the engineer. Since the new water booster station put into operation, the booster station has been unable to maintain a water pressure of 20 psi, the minimum required by the DNR.
Four Raiderette volleyball players named unanimous all-conference, Blair Glendenning, junior, 1st team defensive specialist; Alyssa Johnson, sophmore, 1st team setter; Kelcie Shields, junior, 1st team hitter and Sadie Frost, junior, second team hitter.
Births: October 20, a son, Therin, to Danika and Justin Hornyak..October 22, a son, Draysen, to Ashley Eskridge..October 15, a son, Kenneth, to Kevin and Mallory Lents.
