TABOR, Iowa – The Raiderettes fine volleyball season came to an end last week at Fremont-Mills in the Region 4 quarterfinal. The Knights beat Mount Ayr in four sets to advance to the Region 4 semifinals. The Raiderettes season ends with a 28-11 record while Fremont Mills improved to 22-18-1.
The Raiderettes won the first set in the match by a 26-24 score to take a 1-0 match lead. Fremont-Mills would win the next three sets to take the match 3-1. The Knights tied the match at 1-1 with a second set win 25-22. A third set win of 25-15 gave the Knights a 2-1 lead. \Fremont-Mills took the match, winning the fourth set 25-20.
Mount Ayr had 158 attacks in the match and 47 kills. Aubree Shields led with 74 attacks and 27 kills in the match. Izzy Gilbertson added 44 attacks and 15 kills. Jaylee Shaffer had 39 assists and 12 digs. Shields also had 13 digs and six blocks. Mount Ayr served 73-for-83 with five aces. Shaffer was the leader, going 14-for-18 with three aces.
The Knights had 144 attacks and 45 kills in the match. Two players had double-digit kill totals in Seniors Hayleigh Matton with 14 and Lindze Smith with 12 kills. Junior Lana Alley had 38 assists and senior Reese Gute had 39 digs to lead Fremont-Mills. The Knights served 92-for-97 with three aces led by Abby Malcom who was 19-for-21 with two aces.
The Raiderettes will say goodbye to a senior class of captain Aubree Shields, Mackenzie Knox, Abby Larson and Kensie Barnes. Mount Ayr will have a senior class of captain Jaylee Shaffer, Izzy Gilbertson, Adley Dredge and Dannie Stewart next year.
Postseason begins with 28th season win
The Raiderettes picked up win No. 28 last Monday, October 20 when they beat Essex in the first round of the Class 1A Regional tournament. It is the team’s most wins in a season since the 2017 Mount Ayr team that went 30-2.
Mount Ayr dominated the match, not letting the Trojans score 10 or more points in any of the three sets played. The Raiderettes won the first set 25-9 to take a 1-0 match lead. Mount Ayr took command of the match by winning the second set, 25-8 to take a 2-0 lead. Mount Ayr claimed the match and advanced, winning the third set, 25-9.
Mount Ayr had 76 attacks in the match and 38 kills. Aubree Shields and Izzy Gilbertson tied for the lead in kills with 15 each. Jaylee Shaffer had 24 assists. Shields led in digs with seven. Mount Ayr as a team served 65-for-73 with 11 aces led by Abby Larson who was 19-for-19 with four aces.
