MOUNT AYR, Iowa — Once again the Avenue of the Flags showed off more than 337 American flags in a spectacular display under a modeled sky at the Rose Hill Cemetery on Monday, May 25. Each year communities across Ringgold County celebrate the brave men and women who gave their lives to the country they served. Memorial Day is not just another day off from work, it’s an homage to the souls who gave the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country.
Members of local honor guard comprised of area veterans, assembled at the grave sites around the various historic cemeteries to usher in the holiday. To many this holiday represents a bitter sweet collection of emotions. There is the pride that comes with the knowledge that a loved one contributed to the freedoms we all enjoy, but there is also sorrow for the personal loss to the family. Throughout history, more than 1.1 million American men and women have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. These men and women served as far back as the Revolutionary War and through the current conflicts taking place all across the globe. Their service is honored collectively as no one roster of all those that sacrificed is available to the general public. Communities gather and honor those they can. Local men and women who often traveled far from home to wage war on foreign soil only to help prevent waging war in our own back yards.
In addition to the ceremonies held at Rose Hill in Mount Ayr, our neighbors in Diagonal, Benton, Ellston and Tingley and all throughout the county held ceremonies on this special day.
