One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News, Thursday, June 9, 1926.)
At the special election held on the day of the primary election, Monday, the proposition of issuing bonds in the sum of $150,000 for the purpose of building and equiping a court house for Ringgold C ounty carried by a majority of 592 votes, 2295 votes being cast in favor of the proposition and 1703 against, according to the unofficial canvass.
This was the fifth time the proposition of issuing bonds was submitted to the voters since the old court house was condemned in 1921, at each election the proposition being defeated by a small margin. Election post mortems are always unprofitable and regardless of the causes that may have entered into the defeat of the measure at previous elections, the people of Ringgold County have reason to rejoice that the vote was favorable at Monday’s election.
After a careful survey of last season’s crop yield the state department of agriculture announces that Iowa produced 492,847,590 bushels of corn. That is 61 per cent greater than the yield of 1924. The earlier high total was in 1922 when Iowa land yielded 465,915,000 bushels. Ground planted with corn in 1925 included 104,317 acres more than had been estimated. Iowa also set a new record in oats production, harvesting 243,647,413 bushels.
Ed Kelso, owner and manager of Grant City’s new amusement park, has announced that the formal opening of the park will be held on Wednesday, June 16th. Attractions at this new park will
be a new concrete swimming pool, a new dance hall, ferris wheel, merry-go-round and other attractions that will be added from time to time.
The new concrete swimming pool will hold 190,000 gallons of water. It is equipped with a slide, and diving boards. A building on the south of the pool contains dressing rooms which are completely equipped with shower baths, toilets and in the ladies’ room an electric hair dryer.
Mrs. Martha Bentley came Sunday, May 30, from her home in Creston to spend some time at the J.W. Bailey, Clyde Bailey and George Bentley homes.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

News of Our Men in the Service: Sgt. and Mrs. James P. Monaghan, of Killeen, Texas, are the proud parents of a son, James Philip, Jr.,
born June 15, at the Fort Hood hospital. Weight, four pounds. Mrs. Monaghan is the former Aileene Hogue, and the grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Russell Hogue and Mrs. Margaret Monaghan, of this city.
Pvt. Samuel C. Sickels spent Saturday and Sunday with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Rex Sickels and family. Sammy has one more week of basic training at Fort Riley, Kan., after which he will be transferred.
Sgt. and Mrs. Lyle Dulany, of this city, are the parents of a daughter, Diane Marie, born June 17,
the Ringgold County Hospital. Weight, seven pounds, nine and fourth ounces. Mrs. Dulany is the former Phyllis Fetty and the graparents and Mr. and Mrs. Joe Fetty of Benton, and Mr. and Mrs. T.
Dulany, of Mount Ayr.
George Baldner and Bob Roe were trophy winners at the Grant City open golf tournament held Sunday.
A hail, wind and electrical storm struck Ringgold County about six o’clock Tuesday evening, caused property damage estimated at thousands of dollars.
Rex Sickels was accidentally injured in the arm Saturday when a gun he was carrying exploded. He
was taken to the Ringgold County Hospital where X-rays were taken, showing a one-inch piece of steel
imbedded just below the elbow. He is being treated by a local doctor.

Fifty Years Ago

Ellston grocery had a break-in Monday night. The theft of about $500 in cash and checks, food items, a cassette tape player and a rifle from Ed’s Forgot Grocery at Ellston, was discovered by the owner, Ed Reynolds, when he came to open up for work Tuesday morning, June 15. The break-in was thought to
have occurred sometime during the early morning hours. Missing items included lunch meat, cheese, 10 to 15 pounds of frozen hamburger, two chickens, four gallons of ice cream, the tape player, a 22 automatic rifle and the money and checks. The Ringgold County sheriff’s office personnel is investigating.
Teresa Ingram of Kellerton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Myron Ingram, has been selected as Ringgold County Pork Queen for the year. She was selected at a meeting held June 8.
Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Trullinger of Mount Ayr were killed June 14, in a head-on collision 12 miles east of Osceola.
Ron Scott has been hired as Mount Ayr Comm. high school football coach for the 1976-77 season. Scott succeeds Rich Yeargle as football coach.
Marriage: June 5, Kathryn Morgan and Alan Marshall.
Birth: June 10, a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Richard Rutledge.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

The latest public notification that a person listed on the Iowa Sex Offender Registry is living in the county was released recently.
There are now three people on the registry living in Ringgold County, according to the state website from Iowa Department of Public Safety with addresses listed as of June 18, 2001.
Many of the people who lost property in the April 11 tornado that hit Ringgold County gathered for a supper at the Mount Ayr American Legion Sunday evening.
The evening was designed for people to be able to compare notes on the diaster and talk about what had happened.
Birth: May 17, a daughter Ally, to Melissa Sobotka and Jacob Waske.. June 8, a daughter, Hayley, to Clint and Aleah Whittington.

Faith Lodge #179 A.F. & A.M. in Mount Ayr celebrated their 150th anniversary Saturday morning with a rededication ceremony.
County Engineer Zach Gunsolley reported that this Monday, County Highway J23 between Diagonal and US Highway 169 was reopend back up to all traffic.

In the Late 60’s & early 70″s me and 3 other buddies used to hunt some farms between Tingley and Ellston. Met some nice farm families ( Petershauns’s and Shields Families and the Jones Families…… BUT we always stopped and ate lunch in Ellston @ Ed’s Forgot Grocery…..Made GREAT Sandwiches !! Also used to eat at the Black Angus Truck Stop in Mt. Ayr. those years. I think Hank Smith might have owned it. ( Maybe when he still had 2 arms ) Anyway, if there is anyway I could have any archived stories about Ed’s Forgot Grocery in Ellston, Would be greatly appreciated.
