OSCEOLA, Iowa — The Raiderette volleyball team won their first match of the season last week after playing six matches in all. Mount Ayr will be in action against a pair of Pride of Iowa Conference teams this week, both on the road. The Raiderettes played at Lenox for their conference opener on Tuesday (results not available as of press time) and they will travel to East Union on Thursday.
The Radierettes began last week on August 25 at the Stanton Viking Quadrangular with Shenandoah and Lenox. Mount Ayr fell in all three matches. Mount Ayr lost 2-1 to both Lenox and Shenandoah and 2-0 to Stanton.
Mount Ayr ended the week at the Clarke volleyball kick-off tournament. There, they played Perry, Clarke and Lamoni. The Raiderettes won their first match of the season, a 2-0 sweep of Perry. The set scores were 21-9 and 21-11. The other two matches saw Mount Ayr fall 2-0 to both Clarke and Lamoni.
The Perry match saw Mount Ayr win by a 2-0 sweep. Mount Ayr took the first set 21-9 and the second set 21-11. Mount Ayr had 27 attacks in the match and had 11 kills. Dannie Stewart and Jaylee Shaffer had three and two kills respectively. Adley Dredge also had a pair of kills. Mount Ayr had seven different players with a kill in the match. Shaffer led in assists with nine and Stewart had a team high eight digs. Mount Ayr had nine ace serves in the match. Stewart led going 9-for-11 with five ace serves.
Against Lamoni, Mount Ayr had 15 kills led by Payton Worthington with five, while Kynzlee Shaffer and Brynlea Shields had three each. Jaylee Shaffer led in assists with 13 while Stewart had six digs. Mount Ayr served 32-for-36 as a team with four aces. Mackenzie Jackson led going 10-for-10 with an ace. Mount Ayr lost by set scores of 21-16 and 21-19.
Against Clarke, the Raiderettes lost in two sets by twin scores of 21-17. Mount Ayr had 13 kills led by Stewart with four and Kynzlee Shaffer with three. Jaylee Shaffter had six assists and Kate Newton had four digs to lead the team. Mount Ayr served 33-for-37 with four aces as a team. Worthington led going 8-for-10 with two aces.
