HARLAN, Iowa – With the regular season winding down and Homecoming on the horizon, the Raiders didn’t let anything get in their way last Friday. The Raiders week 6 game was supposed to be played in Avoca, but with the recent rains, the football field that AHSTW was unusable and the game was moved to Harlan, where the Cyclones were on the road at Creston and the field has artificial turf. The result was a Mount Ayr drubbing of their district foe, 42-17 in a game that the Raiders needed to keep their postseason hopes alive.
Mount Ayr improved to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in Class A District 7. AHSTW fell to 3-4 overall and 1-3 in District 7. The win moves the Raiders one step closer to the postseason, especially since they hold the tiebreaker against the Vikings.
Mount Ayr will play at home Friday for their homecoming game against Nodaway Valley before ending the season at SW Valley. A win Friday, could set up a key game in week 8 with playoff seeding on the line.
Mount Ayr scored on the first play of the game last Friday after receiving the opening kick-off. A 66-yard touchdown run by Dyson Thompson on an option play to the right, saw the senior back break three tackles along his way to the endzone. A Thompson 2-point conversion set the score at 8-0. The touchdown was the first of three for Mount Ayr in the first quarter.
With 8:18 left in the opening quarter, Adler Reed crossed the goal line from one-yard out to make the score 15-0. It was the second straight scoring drive to open the game for the Raiders. Mount Ayr would extend its lead to 21-0 three minutes later, as Drayden Thompson connected with Reed on another big play in the quarter, a 69-yard scoring pass, to make the Raiders offense 3-for-3 with scoring in as many offensive drives.
That score would hold until AHSTW would put up 10 second quarter points to see the halftime score with the Raiders up 21-10.
Mount Ayr and AHSTW traded scores in the first part of the third quarter with the Raiders points coming from a 17-yard Dyson Thompson scoring run to set the score at 29-10. Leading 29-17, the Raiders would end the quarter with 14 unanswered points. Reed’s second scoring run with 4:20 left and Thompson’s third rushing score with 1:29 left in the quarter extended the Raiders lead to 42-17. Neither team scored in the final quarter.
