MILLARD MCKINLEY HOLDEN

MILLARD MCKINLEY HOLDEN, ELDEST CHILD AND ONLY SON OF JOHN C. AND PEARL FRY HOLDEN, WAS BORN IN LOTTS CREEK TOWNSHIP, RINGGOLD COUNTY, IOWA, NOVEMBER 23, 1896 AND DEPARTED THIS LIFE IN ST. IGNATIUS, MONTANA, TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 1924, AGED 27 YEARS, 10 MONTHS AND 7 DAYS.  THE DECEASED GREW TO MANHOOD ON THE FARM.  AT AN EARLY AGE HE BECAME INTERESTED IN HIS SCHOOL WORK AND SOON FINISHED THE EIGHTH GRADE WORK AND ENTERED HIGH SCHOOL AT MOUNT AYR, GRADUATING WITH THE CLASS OF 1913, WINNING HIGH HONORS IN HIS CLASS.  HE CONTINUED HIS STUDIES AT THE STATE UNIVERSARY OF IOWA FOR A TIME AND LATER ENTERED COE COLLEGE OF CEDAR RAPIDS UNTIL THE CALL OF HIS COUNTRY CAME AT THE TIME OF THE WORLD WAR.  HE ENLISTED IN THE ARMY AND WAS ASSIGNED TO THE QUARTER MASTER’S DEPARTMENT OF THE 88TH REGIMENT WITH WHICH BRANCH HE SERVED TO THE END OF THE WAR SPENDING TEN MONTHS IN FRANCE.  ON HIS DISCHARGE FROM THE SERVICE HE SPENT A SHORT TIME AT HOME BUT ANXIOUS TO BEGIN LIFE FOR HIMSELF WENT TO THE STATE OF MINNESOTA AND PURCHASED A FARM NEAR BRAINERD, AT WHICH CITY HE MET HIS FUTURE WIFE. ON OCTOBER 16, 1920, HE WAS MARRIED TO ALTA LEAH FITZSIMMONS, DAUGHTER OF MR. AND MRS. ALBERT J. FITZSIMMONS.  TO THIS UNION WAS BORN ONE SON, ROGER WARREN, AGED THREE YEARS.  IN NOVEMBER, 1911, WHILE A STUDENT IN HIGH SCHOOL, MILLARD MADE A PROFESSION OF RELIGION IN THE METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH UNDER THE LABORS OF REV. A.R. GRANT, AND EVANGELISTIC PREACHER AND DURING THE PASTORATE OF RE. W. E. HARDAWAY AND HE NEVER DEPARTED FROM HIS FAITH.  FOR THE PAST FOUR YEARS HE HAD BEEN IN THE EMPLOY OF THE GOVERNMENT OF THE UNITED STATES INDIAN RECLAMATION SERVICE AND WAS VERY RECENTLY PROMOTED TO A MORE RESPONDSIBLE POSITION IN THE GOVERNMENT OFFICE.  ON SEPTEMBER 26 WHILE AT HIS WORK HE WAS STRICKEN WITH A FATAL MALADY AND WAS TAKEN TO THE MISSION HOSPITAL AT ST. IGNATIUS FOR TREATMENT.  HIS LIFE WAS SOON DESPAIRED OF AND THE END CAME SUDDENLY ON TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, AT NOON.  HE LEAVES A SORROWING WIFE, HIS LITTLE SON, ROGER, HIS PARENTS, TWO SISTERS, IRMA AND ARLA, TWO AGED GRANDPARENTS, JOHN HOLDEN AND CHARLES FRY, SEVERAL UNCLES AND AUNTS, NUMEROUS OTHER RELATIVES AND FRIENDS TO MOURN HIS DEATH. MILLARD WAS A QUIET AND UNASSUMING, A STUDENT OF WORTH AND MERIT, A CREDIT TO HIS PARENTS AND A PRINCE AMONG MEN.  HIS YEARS WERE SHORT BUT HE LIVED AN AGE IN EXAMPLE OF CLEAN CHARACTER AND TRUE MANHOOD.  THE FUNERAL SERVICE WAS CONDUCTED BY REV. JAY KIRKENDALL, PASTOR OF THE METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH OF MOUNT AYR, IA, ON SUNDAY, OCTOBER 5 AT 2:30 P.M. AND INTERMENT WAS MADE IN THE ROSE HILL CEMETERY.
