L. Ruth Swigart, 92, of Creston, IA died Friday, December 26, 2008 at the Crest Haven Care Centre of Creston. Services were conducted Tuesday, December 30 at the First Baptist Church in Creston. Pastor Robert Sauser and Rev. Norman Hoag officiated the service. Burial was at the Graceland Cemetery south of Creston. The Powers Funeral Home handled the arrangements. Memorials can be made to First Baptist Church or Iowa Regular Baptist Camp in Ventura, Ia.
L. Ruth Swigart, daughter of Inez (Waers) and David Franklin Gilliland was born Januray 5, 1916 on the family farm in Riley township in Ringgold County. Ruth graduated from Mount Ayr high school before attending teacher’s school. On February 12, 1936 Ruth was united in marriage to Weldon C. Swigart in Mount Ayr, IA. They settled on a farm near Kellerton, IA before moving to Arispe Iowa and later to Creston. Ruth and her family moved again to rural Madison county in 1949 where they continued to farm and she worked as a bookkeeper for Flatts Clothing Store before returning to Creston area. Ruth was a charter member of the Grace Baptist church in Winterset and the First Baptist church in Creston where she was a dedicated musician, Sunday school teacher and person of hospitality. She also was a member of the ladies Missionary Organization as well. Survivors include her husband, Weldon C. of Creston, IA; two sons, Earl (wife Eleanore) Swigart of Parker Colorado; a daughter-in-law Phyllis Swigart of Union Grove, WI; a brother, Lyle (wife Jean) Gilliland of Mount Ayr, IA; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews and friends. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Glenn David and Kenneth Dale Swigart and two great grandchildren, Brandon Swigart and Madison Shaw.
