Edward Leroy Jones

Edward Leroy Jones known to all as Roy, was born to Floyd & Kathryn Marie (Cole) Jones on February 19, 1918 in Clarke county Iowa.  He passed from this life on December 26, 2008.

Roy spent his early years in Decatur county, Iowa and graduated from Beaconsfield High School in 1935.  On August 26, 1938 he married Alma Elizabeth Boles.  They were blessed with three children, Catherine Donita, Ellen Oneta and Maurice Leroy. Roy began a life time of farming north of Grand River.  He was also employed by the Charles Stuck family and later for Sargent’s Rock Quarry.   He retired from Martin-Marietta in 1984, although he was quoted at that time as saying, “I don’t think I could really retire. I’ve got too much to do.” Roy served on the county and local school boards for over 20 years.

Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Alma, on April 1, 1997; brothers, Francis Maurice, Ralph and Raymond Jones; daughter, Donita Havard and granddaughter, Christina Jones.

Roy is survived by son-in-law Donald Havard and wife Reta of Moravia, IA; daughter Ellen Batty and husband Don of Pardeeville, WI; son Maurice Jones and wife Marsha of Ellston; grandchildren, David & Peggy Havard of Centerville, IA; Duane and Sarah Havard, of Erie, PA; Marci and Jon Woodward and Shawn & Sherrie Batty, all of Springfield, MO; Elisa Jones and Nicholas Webb of Hyde Park, IL; and Laura & Derek Rathbun of Overland Park, KS; great-grandchildren, Tyler & Tiffany Havard, Adam and Larissa Havard, Blake Havard, Tara Havard, Jessica Havard, Garrett and Dillion Havard, Jackson & Elle Woodward and Isaac Webb; sister-in-law Dorine Jones and Barb Jones; brother-in-law Mansel Smith; numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at the Slade-O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, IA on Sunday, January 11, 2009, with Rev. Joyce Smith officiating. Burial was in the Grand River Cemetery, Grand River Iowa.
