Clustie Dean Asburn August 30, 1912 – November 28, 2009

Clustie Dean Ashburn, daughter of Everett and Elsie (Burrell) McDowell, was born August 30, 1912 in New Buda Township, Decatur county, Iowa.

Clustie was united in marriage to Leland Ashburn on August 3, 1927 in Leon, Iowa. Clustie was a farm wife and mother. In 1949, they moved to Diagonal and farmed until moving into Diagonal in 1973. Leland passed away in April 1974. Clustie continued to live in Diagonal until moving to Indianola four years ago. Clustie became a resident of Good Samaritan Center in Indianola in June of 2009. She passed away on November 28, 2009 at the Good Samaritan Center.

Clustie was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sons Clarence and Darrell; grandson Dwight Ashburn; one sister Gladys Koker, and two brothers Burrell and Gerald McDowell.

Survivors include her sons John Ashburn and wife Donna of Jeffersonville, Indiana and Leland Ashburn, Jr. and wife Linda of Ackworth, Iowa; daughter-in-law Doris Ashburn of Onawa, Iowa; 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 18 great-great-grandchildren; one brother Dale McDowell and wife Ella of Tangent, Oregon; and one sister Marlene Hampton and husband Lymon of Tangent, Oregon.

Funeral services were held Monday, November 30 at the United Church of Diagonal with Reverend Bruce Giese and Reverend Eydie Stephens officating. Music was provided by Judy Newton.

Casketbearers were Brett Ashburn, Rob Burton, Pete Lenihan, Clint Ashburn, Jim Newton and Nolan Newton.

Honorary pallbearers were Roy Lumbard, Claire Newton, Ken Core, Dan Baker and Ivan ‘Butch’ Sobotka.

Clustie was laid to rest in the Knowlton Cemetery near Diagonal. Watson-Armstrong Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
