H.W. “Bib” Combs March 23, 1918- February 15, 2010

 H.W. ‘Bib’ Combs was born March 23, 1918 in the farm home of his parents, Charley Combs and Mae (Wilkinson) Combs, near Allendale, Missouri. He passed away on February 15, 2010 at the Clearview Home in Mount Ayr, Iowa.

The family moved to Redding, Iowa, where Bib graduated from high school with the class of 1936. Bib served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He and Maxine Sego were married September 1, 1945 in Troy, Kansas. One son, Michael, was born to this union. Following their marriage, the couple farmed in the Redding area until retiring to their home in Mount Ayr in 1987. They were privileged to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary in 2005.

Bib was a member of the American Legion Post No. 172, Mount Ayr, Iowa; Allensville Lodge 194, Grant City, Missouri; Shriners, and Redding United Methodist Church. He was a former member of the Mount Ayr Golf and Country Club where he enjoyed playing golf with the ‘senior group.’ He served on the first board of directors of the newly organized Mount Ayr Community school district. Bib was involved in sports during high school (especially basketball) and maintained this interest throughout his life.

Bib is preceded in death by his wife, his parents and his siblings, Cecil Combs, Harley Combs, Tim Combs, John Combs, Gladys Thompson, Ruby Jennings and Cleda Danials.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Gloria Combs of Mount Ayr, Iowa; sister-in-law, Vera Combs of Mount Ayr, Iowa; nieces and nephews; members of Maxine’s family, and many friends. A memorial fund has been established to the United Methodist Church in Redding.

Services were held Thursday, February 18, 2010, at Watson-Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr with Rev. Skip Rushing officiating. Musicians were Debbie Cannon, Mary Davenport and Margaret Bickers.

Memorials went to the Redding United Methodist Church, Redding.

Burial will be at a later date in the Redding Cemetery, Redding.
