JERRY MONDAY

     Jerry Allen Monday, 64, of Creston, entered rest on Thursday August 2, 2012 at Creston Nursing and Rehab in Creston, Iowa.
    Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 6, at the Powers Funeral Home in Creston.  Flag presentation was by the Theodore J. Martens Post #1797 of the V.F.W. in Creston. Burial will be at a later date. 
    Memorials may be directed to the Park and Recreation Project and the Creston Boys and Girls Little League program. Online condolences may be given at www.powersfh.com.
    Monday was born on April 25, 1948 in Maryville, MO to Denzil Duane and Doris June (Miller) Monday. He graduated from Mount Ayr High School in 1966, attended Southwestern Community College from 1967-1968, and AIB College in 1969.  He was then drafted to the US Army in June of 1969 and sent to Vietnam in November 1969 as a combat medic with the 101st Airborne. He returned to the US in November 1970 and finished his time in Fort Sam Houston, TX, training medics for combat duty.
    Monday received his Silver and Bronze Star for Valor above and beyond expectations, ending his career as an E-6. He attended to wounded soldiers shot down in the ground forces, giving medical assistance where needed without fear or concern for his own safety. He was then honorably discharged. After returning home he worked at Westinghouse in Lacyne, KS as a bookkeeper until 1974.
    On February 18, 1978, Jerry was united in marriage with Lois Marie McNichols at the Methodist Church in Creston.  To this union one son was born, Taylor Nicholas Monday, on June 8, 1980 in Creston.  Jerry retired from the USPS in April of 2010 after 25 years of service. 
    Monday worked at Monday Tax Service as a bookkeeper for 20 years and enjoyed all the client visits. Jerry enjoyed his last two years mowing for Park and Rec for the city of Creston.
    Monday accepted Christ at an early age at a church camp in Redding  and he was a member of the United Church of Christ Congregational, Eagles, Elks, American Legion and Crestmoor Golf Club, all in Creston.
    Left to cherish his memory are his wife Lois; mother, Doris Monday of Redding;  three children, Lesha (Jeff) Clark, Timothy (Shelly) Leach, all of Creston and  Taylor (Amanda) Monday of Iowa City, Iowa; a sister, Teresa (Jack) Wilcox of  Grant City, MO; six grandchildren, Lara (Keith) Post, Jamie (Josh) Horton, Jenna Leach and Jordan Leach (fianc?? Brandea Clayton), Aiden and Owen Monday; two great-grandchildren, Brenton and Jonah Post; special friends Curt and Diana Turner. and numerous brother and sister in-laws, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and many, many special friends.
    Monday is preceded in death by his father, Denzil Monday, maternal grandparents Alva and Clella Miller, and paternal grandparents Andrew and Lula Monday, in-laws, Paul and Gladys McNichols, and one grandson Travis Vanderpluym.
