GAYLAN LEWIS COMBS

    Gaylan Lewis Combs, son of Lewis ‘Sod’ and Cuma Brown Combs, was born April 16, 1935 in Redding, Iowa and passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his family, on August 11, 2012.
    Gaylan attended school in Redding and spent some time in Lodi, California. In November, 1950 he moved with his parents and sister, Janis, to Conway, Iowa where Gaylan graduated with the class of 1953.
    Immediately after graduation, he joined the US Navy. His four years of service were spent mostly in San Diego and at Point Barrow, Alaska on an ice breaker, the USS Burton Island. He was honorably discharged in July 1957.
    Gaylan was united in marriage to Farylan ‘Penny’ White on July 31, 1954 in Upland, California. To this union, four children were born: Linda, Richard, Michael and Mark.
    After his discharge from the Navy, Gaylan worked 10 years for Sunkist Growers in Ontario, California. In July of 1966, he moved, with his family, to Mount Ayr, Iowa where he joined his father in owning and operating a feed store and trucking business for 25 years.         Gaylan worked at Woodlink LTD for 10 years with his latest employment working as a custodian for the US Post Office before full retirement in July 2011.
    Gaylan belonged to the United Methodist Church and the American Legion, Ringgold Post #172, for 40 plus years. He loved yard work and gardening and spending time with his grandchildren. He was an avid collector of toy cars and trucks and accumulated hundreds of them over many years.
    He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 53 years, Penny, on April 28, 2008; parents; parents-in-law Fred ‘Fussy’ and Hazel White; stillborn son Mark in August 1973; beloved daughter Linda in May 1999; two brothers-in-law Danny White and Dennis Vanosdall; and sister-in-law Margie White Martin.
    Left to cherish his memory are two sons Rich Combs of Atlantic, IA and Angie Rieger of Urbandale, IA and Mike Combs and wife Beth of Marion, IA; four grandchildren Dillon (Alicia) Combs of Slater, Stacey Raymie of Creston, and Dalton and Micaela Combs of Marion; great-granddaughter Peyton Combs; sister Janis (Gene) Hamrick of Shelby, NC; brothers-in-law Al White of Council Bluffs, Ivan White of Lenox, and Don Martin of Creston; and sisters-in-law Vicki Vanosdall of Galesburg, IL and Becky White of Fallon, NV; special friends and neighbor Harold, Melynda, and Sam Crawford; several other relatives, many good friends, and his faithful dog Gertie.
    A memorial fund has been established in his name.
    Services will be held at Watson-Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr on Thursday, August 16, at 10:30 a.m.
    Officiating is Rev. Skip Rushing.
     Songs are  ‘Amazing Grace,’ ‘When I Get Where I am Going’ and ‘Go Rest High On That Mountain.’
     Casketbearers are Dalton Combs, Dillon Combs, Kirk Golliday, Mack Greene, Mike Wimer             and John Campbell.
     Honorary pallbearers are Eldon Still, Harold Crawford, Gene Hamrick, Bob Christner, Raymond Hensley and Ed Rotert.
     Military rites will be shared by the Ringgold Post #172 Iowa Honor Guard Unit.
     Burial is in the Redding Cemetery  in Redding, Iowa.
    Watson-Armstrong Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
