Erma Harris
Erma Pearl Wood Harris, daughter of Edward C Wood and Anna Lois Thompson Wood, passed away September 21, 2012 at the age of 94 years.
She was born February 13, 1918 in Liberty township, Ringgold county, Iowa. She lost her mother at an early age in 1922 but persevered with the support of family and friends graduating from Mount Ayr high school class of 1935.
She was joined in marriage to Clarence Albert Harris on June 4, 1936 at Albany, Missouri. Their early years were spent living with Albert’s parents, Herbert and Mary Harris, on their farm near Beaconsfield. In 1941 they purchased the 80-acre tract where they lived and farmed for the next 56 years. Two children were born of this marriage — a son, Lyle Edward, on August 17, 1946 and a daughter, Barbara Ann, on October 13, 1950.
Erma’s family roots run deep in Ringgold county dating back to the early pioneers. Her grandfather was S.L. Thompson, a respected citizen in the community, who came to the county in 1868 with his parents at the age of 12.
Erma and Albert’s years on the farm were spent happily among extended family and friends with lots of visiting and card playing. She was a member of the Kellerton Methodist Church and volunteered readily for activities at both there and the school.
Erma’s hands were seldom idle as she enjoyed time spent in craftwork. Her greatest passion was quilting and needlework. Over her lifetime she produced many fine quilt works of art, giving many away to friends and family. She continued to quilt into her later years until poor health would no longer allow her to continue.
Prior to Albert’s death in 1997, Erma moved to a home in Kellerton where she resided until she entered the Mount Ayr Health Care Center. She spent her remaining years under the kind care of the staff at this facility.
Erma was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Berwin and Velmar ‘Pete;’ her half sisters, Alberta and Shirley, and half brother, Ronald.
She leaves behind her children, Lyle (Kay) Harris of Grimes, Iowa and Barbara (Steve) Boles of Des Moines, Iowa; grandchildren, Stephanie (John) Dillon, Chris (Tammy Hines) Harris, Tim (Tina) Harris; great-grandchildren, Meghan and Gavin Dillon, Shelby, Alyssa, Jackson and Devin Harris and Cassie Woods; sister-in-law, Betty Stuart of Kellerton, Iowa, and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A memorial fund has been established in her name to be decided later.
Services were conducted at Watson-Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr on Wednesday, September 26, 2012, with Rev. Terry Roberts officiating. Musicians were Sandy Campbell and Richard and Camille Jackson.
Casket bearers included Lyle Harris, Steve Boles, John Dillon, Chris Harris, Jackson Harris and Dwayne Peppmeier.
Burial was in the Oliver Cemetery near Kellerton.
