Margaret Mary Henderson

Margaret Mary Henderson passed away peacefully surrounded by family on September 27, 2012. Mary, the oldest child of Millard and Adeline (Wise) Haning, was born February 19, 1926 in Anderson, Iowa. Living in Fremont county throughout her childhood, Mary graduated high school in 1943 from Farragut high school.  After graduation she worked at the KMA Radio in Shenandoah. She then attended Tarkio College in Tarkio, Missouri and after earning her teaching certificate, taught elementary school at Baxter, Iowa for three years.            

On June 18, 1949, she was united in marriage with John R. Henderson. To this union were born three children, James Robert (Bob), Mary Diane and Margaret Joan. Mary and J.R. farmed north of Tingley, Iowa until the fall of 1955 when they moved to Tarkio, Missouri where J.R. finished his college degree. In the fall of 1957, they moved to Shannon City, Iowa where Mary taught and J.R. was principal. Teaching at many schools across southwest and western Iowa, they lived in College Springs, Murray, Correctionville, Lamoni, Villisca and Bedford. After J.R.’s death in 1980, Mary maintained the family home in Bedford until 1998 when she moved to Council Bluffs.           

Mary was a longtime member of the Order of the Eastern Star serving several times as Worthy Matron while a member in Bedford. She was a current member of Harmony Chapter, O.E.S. in Council Bluffs. She is also a longtime member of P.E.O. and served as president of Chapter CU in Bedford. She was a current member of Chapter GQ in Council Bluffs. A member of Saint John’s Lutheran Church, Mary was a devout Christian, finding a church home in every community in which the family lived. In 1980 Mary was honored as an Ideal Mother by American Mothers, Inc. of Iowa.           

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, J.R.; her parents; two infant sisters, Wava Lou and Susan Diane, and two nieces, Georgia Anne Haning and Patricia Jo Bryte.

She is survived by her siblings, Vineta (Reldon) Bryte of Farragut, Iowa, Lu (Roberta) Haning of Kansas City, Missouri and Jim (Mary Anne) Haning of Kerrville, Texas; her children, Bob (Monica) Henderson of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Diane (David) Petty of Eldora, Iowa and Joan (Ed) Ebersold of Council Bluffs, Iowa; four granddaughters and their spouses, Adrienne (Henderson) and Justin Lee of Nevada, Missouri, Alison (Henderson) and Aaron Balliet, of Shawnee, Kansas, Dresden (Petty) and Derek Wulf of Hudson, Iowa and Arica (Ebersold) and Ryan Goulet of Jacksonville, Florida; one grandson, Robert Ebersold of Eldora, Iowa; three great-grandchildren, Laker Scott Lee, Aubrey Adeline Wulf and Evan Arvel Balliet, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services were Tuesday, October 2, 2012, at Saint John’s Lutheran Church in Council Bluffs, Iowa with Pastor Jon Benson officiating. Memorials will go to the American Red Cross and interment was in the Sidney, Iowa cemetery. The Crawford-Marshall Funeral Chapel in Sidney was in charge of arrangements.
