DAVID JULIAN IRVING

David Julian Irving, son of George Oliver and Marjorie Eloise (Ritz) Irving, was born December 28, 1926 in Lizton, Indiana. Dave lived his life at Mount Ayr and he graduated from Mount Ayr high school in 1945. While in high school, Dave lettered four years in baseball, four years in basketball and two years in football. He was a member of the 1944 undefeated football team; playing guard on offense and linebacker on defense. While in high school Dave worked in Irving Clothing Store and to earn extra money, he mowed the golf course and the ‘old lake’ park.
Dave married Darlene Dulany on December 27, 1945 in Troy, Kansas. He continued working at Irving Clothing Store and with his interest in carpentry and the help of his good friend Clyde Lamb, Dave opened a second Irving Clothing store in Osceola, Iowa in 1972 with son Tim and a third in Indianola, Iowa in 1975 with his son-in-law, Jim Westerly. In addition to the clothing store, Dave was a land owner and raised cattle. He started with his dad, George, in 1947 and fed cattle until he was 85. Dave enjoyed collecting antique cars and old money. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Methodist Men and Mount Ayr Business Men Association.
Dave passed away January 8, 2014 at the Ringgold County Hospital in Mount Ayr. He was preceded in death by his parents and daughter in-law, Nancy Irving.
Survivors include his wife, Darlene Irving of Mount Ayr, Iowa; sons, Pat (Ame) Irving of Davenport, Iowa and Tim Irving of Davenport, Iowa; daughters, Vicki (Jim) Westerly of Indianola, Iowa and Jean (Dick) Sulentic of Truro, Iowa; 11 grandchildren, Jeremy (Celeste) Irving, Colby (Jeanetta) Irving, Marissa (Danny) Antle, Dirk (Tiffany) Westerly, Blair (Kara) Westerly, Breck Westerly, Dane Sulentic, Kellen Sulentic, Madeline Sulentic, Olivia Sulentic and Ashley (Tim) Harles, and eight great-grandchildren Rileigh Antle, Brycen Antle, Ella Irving, Millie Irving, Ada Westerly, Landry Westerly, Arianna Harles and Jordyn Harles.
Watson-Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr was in charge of the arrangements.
Services were held at the United Methodist Church in Mount Ayr on Saturday, January 11, 2014. Rev. Skip Rushing officiated. Musicians included Debbie Cannon and Drew Ingram.
Casket bearers were Jeremy Irving, Colby Irving, Dirk Westerly, Blair Westerly, Breck Westerly, Dane Sulentic and Kellen Sulentic.
Coffee Club included Doris Hannon, Melynda Crawford, Bob Thomas, Harold Crawford, Gene Motsinger, Randall Brown and Kenneth Hebensperger.
Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Mount Ayr.
A memorial fund has been established to the Alzheimer’s Association.
